I noticed that mutter in the logs is version 42 - my mirror is out of date it looks like - this seems like a possible candidate for the crash?
I'll wait till the mirror updates and try again - will report back.
Mirror looks fully sync'ed so tried again - first machine tested now works fine - so indeed was out of sync mirror problem. will work on other machines next. sorry for noise. gene
