My theme is based on Obsidian Coast. Switching back to the default theme cures the problem. You would think Sun could accommodate something as simple as themed color schemes.

Well, its cos I use a dark colour scheme and have the same symptoms. Take a look in the AUR at openoffice-dark-gtk-fix and go-openoffice-dark-gtk-fix, pretty simple scripts which will fix the issue without you having to change your theme (basically start the openoffice up with a certain theme, whatever your current theme is).
