I'm giving up on this for now.  I set up wicd to verify that my driver was not to blame and it worked on the first try, so I'm not going to fight with it anymore.  I would still like to no have to log into X to get wireless running, but for now I can make do.  Thanks.

Have you tried any of the driver quirks with netcfg? Check out: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Netcfg#Driver_Quirks_.28netcfg_2.1_and_l... I had to add: QUIRKS=(prescan preessid) to get my connection working. -geirr
