I agree in general, but IMHO the kernel is different, I do not see any reason to not run whatever kernel people like.

Until it gets deprecated (like 2.6.26 or something). Also a few other packages are very dependent on kernel versions (nvidia/catalyst for example). Of course, those who know what they're doing can do whatever they want.... those who ASK are those who are likely to have problems though.
