I'm failing to find where to do this. The Settings>Notifications switch does not seem to control notifications--at least under the Cinnamon desktop environment.

How can one make these go away?
The notification daemon listens on D-Bus session bus at service org.freedesktop.Notifications, object /org/freedesktop/Notifications. Find out the process providing this service, and decide for yourself whether it's safe to disable it.
If I understand correctly from prowling around the web, this is located somewhere in the /usr/share/dbus-1 directory. But I see no such file. The only thing I found that even includes the the text 'notif' is: n4rky% find /usr/share/dbus-1 -name '*Notification*' /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.panel.applet.NotificationAreaAppletFactory.service n4rky% Is this it? - -- David Benfell / benfell@parts-unknown.org Please see https://parts-unknown.org/node/2 for GnuPG information (or the attachment you don't understand) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.19 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJRhMuEAAoJELJhbl/uPb4SBtwQAJoyLmFtWb9eKgPz+6oqhmQk LZ90keA1WlvXzZF23n7xtXquip4INYVoGRmCk0VA/GnvrPhO5Vx9vljg0UoRUL4g Nj+RZpH0fQmiw1qyDZKY1AuihE7Qnkdu1kerbjGONCuE91mNETjAzntPPIs0ogF8 fP37/OoU2jkw4bG+MbTtAVb5snx9nI3uhXKOTsG9wTyQqKGzLioviW1isgdSN8kK ImvRH5YW1+TaEWkHv05LjK+doR3TnVf9N0DPpmPzJL0La9stXQ+zw36cmbyVOd75 u3VRIkp7bSB/uvOOMcJAaSXu28jZ/6liSdjS8LpzS+J1jnqKwGwSYHDEEkz7fiGm FVHOHlIOP58TA8R/xRzh4NEP6TwNefLlveW+RBCVlKxilfbdToMfB/B1lxvY2caX kZ0vSaXr1HHtV0cyvt/p2Mo8iJJhi6fnOv6FMocGUEFUWeTlhLzzB1+4TmJYF4YO b0wU/acOUtxPRDYRD3w+rq7ee/KGrjyV5ep9EIHh4J3ixfyhxXU2bNYeUZBnARsQ MQhCcEFQiM8v0+YGM2s73f9RRmzvJ6jX5PBv3cefbUzVFoxawRFNdCsNHFXBJMdm nDwvRl/BzNm9PZ7hNxbb5so7xfYrmhAWF+2G/cms2ktp+SXwTO+p/IUFUZDJzDNT 8XHtIyZHaruZIThAwJF8 =zRuW -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
