You seem to have missed the transition to systemd, see [1]. conf.d will be removed on a step-by-step basis in next couple of weeks/months.
I haven't, for me it happened a long time ago. The reason to ask was to make sure that I can remove conf.d/ file from my locally-built packages, as the whole directory apparently goes away.
