   But it seems the error is deeper than that. startx will not launch fluxbox
either (which has worked since 2013 when the server was built).

Did you check if your login shell is (still) listed in /etc/shells?
I can assume you did, but you didn't mention this :).

Also, try capturing the output of startx. Perhaps there is something useful there that isn't in the journal.

In the posted output, there was some dbus error. Did this one happen before also?
Perhaps some daemon just needs a reload or restart. Did you try rebooting?
