Anyone know if there's any timeline on when we'll see python 3.11 get released to Arch? I emailed the maintainer about this directly recently, but didn't hear anything back. I know this is a big upgrade, and lots of dependent packages are involved, so this might require some time. I just was wondering if there was any roadmap/timeline for how long that might be. Thanks, DR
Hi David, I appreciate that this isn't exactly the question, I was able to compile without errors yesterday using the listed dependencies provided by https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/python311. Taken with 2.2 at https://docs.python.org/3/using/unix.html#on-linux. It worked seamlessly. Hope this can help tide you over. As with any other Arch package...it'll be released when it's ready (please stop bugging devs/maintainers). Search the archives of `Arch-Dev-Public`. There's a lot of things going on for this upgrade. mlm -- Windows NT Beer: Comes in 32-oz. cans, but you can only buy it by the truckload. This causes most people to have to go out and buy bigger refrigerators. The can looks just like Windows 3.1 Beer's, but the company promises to change the can to look just like Windows 95 Beer's -- after Windows 95 beer starts shipping. Touted as an "industrial strength" beer, and suggested only for use in bars.
I emailed about a month ago asking if there was any timeline for the python 3.11 release. I haven't seen anything mentioned about the 3.11 upgrade here on the list since then. Searching the archives for arch-dev-public didn't turn up anything either. Again, I realize this a big upgrade with lots of dependent packages, and so will likely take a while. Totally get that. And I'm not asking for a specific date. Rather I'm wondering: * Is there a roadmap for the 3.11 release? (I.e., the necessary steps/milestones that need to be completed before releasing?) * If so, where we are on that roadmap? Again, I'm not looking for a specific release date, but rather just hoping to get a little more transparency into the process. I don't think that's a particularly unreasonable think to ask about. (I.e., not deserving of defensive "stop bugging me" emails in response.) And I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested in the answers to those questions. If anyone might have any updates to share on this (or links to where I could find some) I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks, DR On 11/8/22 11:33 AM, Merell L. Matlock, Jr. wrote:

Hi David, we are on and off working on it, but not in the past weeks. There are quite a few things to figure out, as described here [1] although a lot of them have been solved technically already. Other than that, there are also a few (potentially) blocking TODOs [2][3]. As it stands, there is no fixed timeline for Python3.11 and personally I do not think it will be possible this year. I will be quite busy with other things until next year and there are holidays coming up. This might be different for others involved. Aside from the above, we will also need to assess the overlap with migrating our infra [4] and what this means for automated tooling. Therefore, I would not hold my breath ;-) However, if you want to help out with the bootstrap tooling, join #archlinux-python on libera.chat. Just in addition, if you really want to use/tests new python versions without waiting for it to be available in the official repos, you should try `pyenv` [1] and install the versions you want without the fear of damaging your OS [1] https://github.com/pyenv/pyenv -- CJ
BTW, a big thanks to everyone involved with getting Python 3.11 out the door. Clearly it was a big lift. Many thanks to everyone who put in the hard work on it. DR On 12/13/22 9:47 AM, David Rosenstrauch wrote:

Hello, Just a sidenote for some AUR maintainers (I should really forward this to aur-general), python libraries on the AUR have now been broken by this, please ensure you are installing the library to the right directory. Thank you everyone who worked on the Python 3.11 update, and all the rebuilds which came with it.
