[arch-general] PCI modems
Hi all, I'm currently searching for a PCI modem that will be used to receive faxes. I've tried out a few modems but they all use conexant chipsets, which need out-of-tree kernel drivers and currently doesn't work here (kernel oops when the installation script modprobes the driver). Does anyone know of a PCI modem that works out of the box with in-tree kernel drivers? Thanks, Glenn

Hi Any PCI _real_ modem (not soft/win modem) will work without any special driver, just the driver for serial ports. No need to fight with special drivers ;) Modems like US Robbotics 0727 is ideal. The only problem maybe is find where to buy today. Search for "0727 modem" in ebay: http://preview.tinyurl.com/l7d9xj Good Luck! -- Gerardo Exequiel Pozzi ( djgera ) http://www.djgera.com.ar KeyID: 0x1B8C330D Key fingerprint = 0CAA D5D4 CD85 4434 A219 76ED 39AB 221B 1B8C 330D

Hi, I don't think using second hand modems is a good idea, I really need something I can buy in a store... Thanks, Glenn

Yes, they get you on shipping.. $12.34 for shipping in the states for UPS ground for a few ounces? That's more than the last couple of USR's I bought of ebay. As for 'new' versus 'used', I've had great luck with modems off ebay. Modems either work or they don't, not much to wear out. (lightning excluded) Once you get your modem, I suspect you will be using hylafax as your fax receiving package. When you do, also look into "Avantfax" web front-end to hylafax and tesseract for OCR of incoming faxes. Both work excellent. I have had the combination running on an old AMD K6-2 450 as my office fax server for a year or so and love it. I have a quick setup page for the combination (somewhat openSuSE related) at: http://www.3111skyline.com/linux/avantfax.php -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
