[arch-general] nvidia card - fans are really cranked up after the latest driver update a week or so ago
Listmates, I have been chasing an issue on Arch having to do with the 8800GT in it. A couple of weeks ago there was a driver update from Nvidia that has caused the fans on my video card to really take off. With all drivers before that there wasn't a noise issue. The box is dual boot with openSuSE 11.0 so I can confirm that this is an arch/nvidia issue. Has anyone else noticed fan speed increases on your NV cards here lately? If so, any solutions?? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Rankin Law Firm, PLLC 510 Ochiltree Street Nacogdoches, Texas 75961 Telephone: (936) 715-9333 Facsimile: (936) 715-9339 www.rankinlawfirm.com

Hello I suggest you take it up with nvidia, as only they have access to the source code. Nothing much we can do about it. Best regards, Glenn

He didn't ask for "source-code-level" clarification. He asked if anyone has similar problems and/or knows a solution. Nvidia forums are a fine bet to seek that, but I don't see what's wrong with him asking that here. Dieter

More importantly the email said it was 'Dual Boot' with openSUSE so I read the post as saying "It works fine under SUSE but runs like crazy under Arch" which is probably why the question is asked here and not at Nvidia.

Well he also said the problem started to happen after a nvidia upgrade. Yet we have no information about which nvidia version works fine on arch, which nvidia version causes the problem, and which one works fine in opensuse.

Well, I'm sorry I wasn't clearer here. Dieter and Dick nailed the intent of my post. I was asking here because the fan issue only effects my Arch Linux install on this box and not the openSuSE install. I know the nvidia driver is closed source and it is nothing but a black-box to the Linux community in general. This issue has come and gone once or twice before over the past couple of years and I primarily wanted confirmation whether anyone else running Arch had noticed it. I am familiar with the NVidia forums, a registered member there, and I have filed bugs with NVidia related to the issue. But, as was correctly pointed out, I was looking for two things: (1) confirmation whether anyone on the Arch list had noticed fan speed increases on their NNidia cards in the past several weeks and, if so, (2) whether anyone had found a solution? Sorry to confuse the issue. Thank you for your responses and help. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Glenn, Thanks. I have had a bug open with them for the past 3-4 weeks and haven't heard anything. Evidently, there are a couple issues being worked that effect linux users related to this issue. (1) The fan/temp sensor, fan speed issue and (2) downclocking of the cards when certain compositing flags are set by the desktop WM. The issues seem to be opposite-ends of the same stick. Trying to solve (1) causes (2) and trying to correct (2) causes (1). They should just opensource the code and watch the issues be corrected in less than 24 hours by the brilliant OS programmers and see sales double at the same time as word got out. (seems almost like a "legitimate business decision" on NV's part ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
