[arch-general] "The Canterbury Distribution"
EDIT: ah jeez ... it's that damn time of year again. haha i always forget about the day of fools until i'm 3 seconds from spamming my gullibility to the world. sending anyway because i already wrote it ;-) C Anthony ------------------------------------------------------ so i sorta meandered to the debian.org homepage randomly, and was surprised to see this: [ it's a link, go ahead and click it :-) ] http://www.debian.org/ ------------------------------------------------------ "We are pleased to announce the birth of the Canterbury distribution. Canterbury is a merge of the efforts of the community distributions formerly known as Debian, Gentoo, Grml, openSUSE and Arch Linux. The target is to produce a really unified effort and be able to stand up in a combined effort against proprietary operating systems, to show off that the Free Software community is actually able to work together for a common goal instead of creating more diversity." ------------------------------------------------------ Features The Canterbury distribution will combine the best of the linux world to another game changer for the good of the users: Simple as Arch - technologically simple and bleeding edge. Stable as Debian - highly dependable. Malleable as Gentoo - you get what you really want. Live as Grml - readily usable. Openminded as openSUSE - broad and welcoming for everyone. ------------------------------------------------------ (2011-04-01) - Public Announce Today we came to the point where we feel comfortable to announce the joined effort to the general public. Please watch this space over the next days. ------------------------------------------------------ looks like it was announced today-ish (er tomorrow for me ...), so what i'm wondering if there is any kind of official affiliation here? did anyone here (particularly those close to development processes) know about this? at any rate, sounds pretty cool, should be a good thing. This IS Arch, after all.... doesn't anybody here DIY their keyboards anymore? An old typewriter, some wires and contacts, a progammable IC... Oh wait, that's what we're moving AWAY from. In that case, Canonical will happily sell you a new keyboard for $0.99. With a free subscription to UbuntuOne!
It worth 0,99$ only if it comes with the new distro logo. lol On Fri, Apr 1, 2011 at 12:01 AM, Oon-Ee Ng <ngoonee.talk@gmail.com> wrote:

indeed ... it had me going for a few minutes, that's for sure :-) the funny thing is i kinda liked the idea -- i didn't take it as arch/debian/gentoo/etc were dead as individuals, but more of an experimental collaboration attempt towards a more robust solution ... ie. "a framework for building distributions" ... an idea i already think about quite a bit. sooo tbh, i was slightly disappointed when i realized the it's real purpose ... haha seriously i fall for april fools technology crap every year because i think similar to mann138 from the linked forum thread: "At first I went all WTF, then I realized Aprils Fool and then I went to `what if?`..." :-D C Anthony

I can't see it. Compiling must have failed. Either they're still or again compiling. :-D Btw., this reminds me of the episode "Almost 9 Distros in Almost 6 Minutes" of the Linux Journal video podcast. :-) http://blip.tv/file/1014284 Heiko
Archlinux is rebellious, I just noticed they put their name first whereas the other all seem to follow the same order, go arch! :) I was very confused this morning when I opened the arch-announce mail about it, hehehe
