The config for a 64-bit kernel does have a few very important differences right at the top, as I recall. Been a while since I looked at the config files though.

I believe that's right. But I recently switched from 32bit to 64bit, and I simply used my 32bit config on 64bit and it looks like the conversion was made automatically when I ran make menuconfig or oldconfig. And I think everything is fine.
