[arch-general] How to take screenshot of ring switcher ?
Hi, I want to impress my friend by showing them the Windows 7 Look on Linux and persuade them to ditch Windows and use Linux. I have enabled compiz and some effects. Anybody knows how to take screenshot of the Ring Switcher ?

The screenshot utility in Gnome should allow you to set a delay on the screenshot. <soapbox> The bling-bling of Compiz is a poor selling point for the real potential of Linux, and I don't believe you should try to "persuade" anyone to switch OSs. </soapbox> d

I don't use GNOME (I don't have it installed, switched to KDE completely). As far as I have seen, the moment people hear the name 'Linux' it reminds them of the console. They think, Linux sucks in GUI sometimes even they think it has no GUI. So this is important. Why do you think other mainstream distros like Ubuntu and Fedora spend so much time on Eye Candy ?

In KSnapshot (native KDE app) you can set a delay too.

There is a difference between forcing users to switch to Linux (which I think is a bad choice) and teaching them what is Linux today (GUI, tools, choice...). It's not improtant that your friends will not use Linux, but they will tell their friends the truth about current state of Linux and these will tell their friends etc...and possibly, as this will spread there will be someone who will try to use Linux and maybe will stick with it. I think that this is the proper way how to spread Linux. But maybe I'm just too optimistic :-) Dan -- --------------------------------- Dan Vrátil vratil@progdansoft.com ICQ 249163429 Jabber progdan@jabber.cz Tel. +420 732 326 870

That's the main aim for which I want to do this. By showing them the screenshots which will look "awesome" to them, it may be possible to win their minds.

This is the silliest reason I've ever heard for switching to Linux. Here are 25 MUCH more important ones : http://www.linfo.org/reasons_to_convert.html

I know this is a silly reason, but this is the general trend I've observed dealing with people in real life and on the internet. They fear from using Linux because they think it has no GUI or it is bad.

Well that's not completely wrong. Tell me how many people install/use/maintain an Arch system without ever touching the command line ? The kde+qt vs gnome+gtk separation doesn't help either for having a coherent and consistent GUI experience. Even Ubuntu documentation contains some occasional commands lines, e.g. random example : https://help.ubuntu.com/9.10/keeping-safe/C/firewall.html#id2774297 A lot of ubuntu guide/tutorial often relies on the command line as well. However all the big distrib have indeed made a lot of effort to provide more and more GUI for every aspect of the system, and it improved a lot in the last years. I don't know if a stupid compiz effect is a good illustration of that progress, but well. Anyway while it's true you can do a lot via a GUI on ubuntu, fedora, suse, etc nowadays, what would Linux be without its great and powerful CLI ? I spend a lot of times every day using a linux terminal, and I just love it. I miss it a lot every time I am forced to use windows.

I am so used to the command line that even in virus infected Windows systems when I have to copy files from a pen drive to the disk because the explorer won't copy them I have the habit of typing 'ls' at cmd.exe prompt !

Yes, MLs, forums and whatnot. When I need to search for any Linux thing I usually google "whatever -ubuntu" to filter out crap.

*gasp* How long till this whole community just figures it hates itself and vaporizes to dust? I'll be there and fuel the vaporizer.

Wait for their machines to be infected by worms all over which it will. Partition their disk and put for them a clean GNU/Linux or BSD system (Linux if they are into skyping etc). Use XFCE as wm. Not Gnome/KDE, its too heavy and its slugginess will put people of. Few more points (1) Make sure that auto mounting of devices happen. (2) Add icons for things like skype/ekiga/pidgin/firefox etc No jazzy desktop effects are required. This strategy had worked wonderfully with people who are not "power" windoze users (parents, uncles, aunts, in-laws, grand mother etc). Desktop effects only scare them off. For the power users you might need compiz and all that. But then after conversion introduce them to the tiling window manager like xmonad and programms like screen, firefox + vimperator etc. Regards ppk

They have good systems with RAM over 1 GB and disk over 100 GB, so that's not an issue. Thanks for the tips about automount, etc. Automount is the easiest to configure in GNOME/KDE, I have suffered a lot without automount in XFCE and LXDE, tried the fixes from wiki but I don't know where I went wrong, so finally I migrated to KDE.
