[arch-general] VirtualBox
I am really needing to install VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads) on my Arch 64-bit machine. I noticed that there is obviously no official download for Arch specifically on their site. I then checked Pacman and it appears there is only a OSE (Open Source Addition) available for 32-bit (i686) systems only. My question is if I download the file from the vendor's site I linked above, can I simply not just install that manually on my Arch Linux 64-bit system or will I run into problems? The package I downloaded was called "VirtualBox-3.1.6-59338-Linux_amd64.run" which I assume is just a self contained installer with all the necessary downloads and required files. I am just trying to figure out that best solution for installing VirtualBox (PUEL) but if I have to, I can even deal with using the less-featured version (Open Source Edition) if it was available via Pacman... Thanks for any help / info! -Carlos

You can use the non-open-source version. It's available (including for 64-bit) from the AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=9753 HTH, DR

The PUEL is on AUR. Have a look at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox .

It seems to me that you are not familiar with AUR, are you? If not, you should read the wiki about it [1] and after that, have a look at the virtualbox_bin package [2]. No, I have never used until today. Which is why I am posting back.

Today I used the AUR for the 1st time in my Arch experience & creating the VirtualBox package was fine. I downloaded http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=9753 tar ball and followed the http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR#Getting_started and installed everything fine. Now when I went to start the 'vboxdrv' it said it could not be found: ##############################################
[root@ghost ~]# /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv start -bash: /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv: No such file or directory
############################################## I show that the installation of VirtualBox did not get any errors: ##############################################
[root@ghost ~]# pacman -Qs virtualbox local/virtualbox_bin 3.1.6-1 Powerful x86 virtualization (Personal Use Binaries Edition).
############################################## Now when I try to start VirtualBox I get the following error: ##############################################
[cmennens@ghost virtualbox_bin]$ VirtualBox VirtualBox: supR3HardenedMainGetTrustedMain: dlopen("/opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.so",) failed: libSDL-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
############################################## Below is what I see after I downloaded the Tarball and ran 'makepkg -s' against it: ##############################################
[cmennens@ghost builds]$ ls -l total 8 drwxr-xr-x 4 cmennens users 4096 Apr 14 09:37 virtualbox_bin -rw-r--r-- 1 cmennens users 3063 Apr 14 09:15 virtualbox_bin.tar.gz [cmennens@ghost builds]$ cd virtualbox_bin [cmennens@ghost virtualbox_bin]$ ls -l total 91336 drwxr-xr-x 6 cmennens users 4096 Apr 14 09:18 pkg -rw-r--r-- 1 cmennens users 4694 Jan 1 1970 PKGBUILD drwxr-xr-x 2 cmennens users 4096 Mar 25 15:10 src -rw-r--r-- 1 cmennens users 113 Jan 1 1970 vbox_build_module -rw-r--r-- 1 cmennens users 3269 Jan 1 1970 vbox.install -rw-r--r-- 1 cmennens users 51834320 Mar 25 15:44 VirtualBox-3.1.6-59338-Linux_amd64.run -rw-r--r-- 1 cmennens users 41664600 Apr 14 09:18 virtualbox_bin-3.1.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
############################################## I installed with 'pacman -U' the 'tar.xz' file that was created today. It went fine with no errors and all dependencies installed. Now I can't figure out how to start the program because it's not in /etc/rc.d/... What did I do wrong or how do I fix it :(

Actually, vboxdrv is a kernel module, so you have to load it. This can be done (as root) with 'modprobe vboxdrv'. If you're going to use VirtualBox on a regular way, a suggest you put vboxdrv in your MODULES array on /etc/rc.conf Below is what I see after I downloaded the Tarball and ran 'makepkg
-s' against it:
############################################## [cmennens@ghost virtualbox_bin]$ ls -l total 91336 drwxr-xr-x 6 cmennens users 4096 Apr 14 09:18 pkg -rw-r--r-- 1 cmennens users 4694 Jan 1 1970 PKGBUILD drwxr-xr-x 2 cmennens users 4096 Mar 25 15:10 src -rw-r--r-- 1 cmennens users 113 Jan 1 1970 vbox_build_module -rw-r--r-- 1 cmennens users 3269 Jan 1 1970 vbox.install -rw-r--r-- 1 cmennens users 51834320 Mar 25 15:44 VirtualBox-3.1.6-59338-Linux_amd64.run -rw-r--r-- 1 cmennens users 41664600 Apr 14 09:18 virtualbox_bin-3.1.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
##############################################
Also, when you update your kernel, you're supposed to run the vbox_build_module again. -- Guilherme M. Nogueira "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." - Arthur C. Clarke

You need to install the package "sdl". It's an optional dependency.

This PKGBUILD currently doesn't use any scripts in "/etc/rc.d/" - that might be changed in future releases. In the meantime, you can (un)load the module manually using modprobe(8) - just as Guilherme said.
Now when I try to start VirtualBox I get the following error:
##############################################
[cmennens@ghost virtualbox_bin]$ VirtualBox VirtualBox: supR3HardenedMainGetTrustedMain: dlopen("/opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.so",) failed: libSDL-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
##############################################
You need to install sdl if you want to use the VirtualBox GUI, have a look at the optional deps.

I installed that and yes I want to use the GUI but its dependency after dependency and it doesn't seem to end... Is there no way just to install are required dependencies? Just for VirtualBox I have installed: sudo pacman -S libxcursor sudo pacman -S sdl sudo pacman -S fontconfig And now it's still complaining about "libXi.so.6"...Is there no way just to resolve everything or locate all required dependencies?

Try using an aur helper - http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Aur_helpers The big ones are clyde, packer, yaourt. they ought to help you with the dependency issues.

How did you install X? All those packages get installed automatically if you install X via `pacman -S xorg` as described in the wiki [1]. [1] http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Installing

I didn't install X on the server. It's CLI only. I then 'ssh -Y' to do X11 forwarding to my desktop who has X installed.
