about translating certain words
hi, I was planning to translate AURweb and archwiki into Bangla. but got into a problem. sorry if I missed this info in the wiki. while reading badly translated https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Pacman_(%E0%A6%AC%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%82%E0%A6%B...) I got confused about how to translate the word "update". because, in Bangla, most people say the word "update" as is but the direct translation would be "হালনাগাদ"(Hālanāgād). I only ever saw people using the word halnagad inside some schoolbooks, not in real life... there are a lot of words like this where we use the English word more than the Bangla word. as it's rare to find documentation in Bangla, I don't know how other people do those. and most Bangla machine translation is just bad. so, my question is do I translate it to casual Bangla (how people normally talk even in formal situations), or hardcore pure Bangla translation ?? in my opinion, it's better to keep it how people normally talk. have a nice day. p.s. sorry, at first i accidentally send it to aur general -- yours zoorat, PGP: 00000586360F8791A5492251129802DDA8074345 GITHUB: https://github.com/z00rat
Hello zoorat, I suggest to follow authorities like the Académie Française. Wikipedia claims Bangla has a Bangla Academy. What would they say? When I translate to German, I do prefer German words, when there’s no good argument against it. The terminology of Debian’s or GNOME’s or other translations is also relevant. I do not find a Bangla team on https://translationproject.org/team/index.html though. Regards, Florian

Hi, that's good practise! OTOH a good arguments against a translation are "in Bangla, most people say", "not in real life".

This IMO is a really important advice, already when not translating into different languages. If foo e.g. calls it "panel" then a Wiki related to foo shouldn't name it "taskbar", even if a lot of people might use the term "taskbar". Regards, Ralf

Hello. Let’s say, if terminology not easily understood, then English is better. What people say does not immediately matter IMHO.

I have the official dictionary from Bangla Academy, I will use it then. at first, I didn't even think about them because they don't have the best reputation... whatever I will try to be as formal as the schoolbooks. as far as I know, those are vetted by Bangla Academy.

I will look into those sources. as far as I remember, they are just bad machine translation. (I mean even grammar doesn't make any sense). Only Android had somewhat of an usable translation... but no one uses those... even tho, Bengali is the seventh most spoken language, online, it's only limited to facebook, youtube, and some news sites... I intended to suggest to take inspiration from other Bangla translations of free, open-source software. It is sad however that from what you say, it appears there are none/few. translationproject.org should have a Bangla team but there is none. In general, try to convey the information in a way useful to Bengali readers. Do *not necessarily* translate literally, like machine translations would. Best wishes, Florian
