[arch-general] multiple i586 update segfaults during pacman -Syu on 2/2/10
Guys, During update tonight, I received multiple segfaults during system update package installation. Given the kde44beta packages involved, I suspect kde will be dead. The full log is: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/Archlinux/bugs/pacman-updt-segfaults.log.bz2 The reported error summaries were: ( 13/344) upgrading akonadi [####################################################] 100% /tmp/alpm_i3RyWJ/.INSTALL: line 1: 10765 Segmentation fault update-mime-database usr/share/mime &>/dev/null error: command failed to execute correctly ( 21/344) upgrading cryptsetup [####################################################] 100% usr/sbin/gconfpkg: line 23: 10796 Segmentation fault GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /usr/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-uninstall-rule ${schemas} > /dev/null error: command failed to execute correctly ( 22/344) upgrading deskbar-applet [####################################################] 100% usr/sbin/gconfpkg: line 18: 10801 Segmentation fault GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /usr/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /usr/share/gconf/schemas/${pkgname}.schemas > /dev/null ( 50/344) upgrading gmime [####################################################] 100% usr/sbin/gconfpkg: line 23: 10899 Segmentation fault GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /usr/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-uninstall-rule ${schemas} > /dev/null error: command failed to execute correctly ( 51/344) upgrading gnome-media [####################################################] 100% usr/sbin/gconfpkg: line 18: 10904 Segmentation fault GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /usr/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /usr/share/gconf/schemas/${pkgname}.schemas > /dev/null usr/sbin/gconfpkg: line 23: 10910 Segmentation fault GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /usr/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-uninstall-rule ${schemas} > /dev/null error: command failed to execute correctly ( 52/344) upgrading gnome-power-manager [####################################################] 100% usr/sbin/gconfpkg: line 18: 10915 Segmentation fault GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /usr/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /usr/share/gconf/schemas/${pkgname}.schemas > /dev/null usr/sbin/gconfpkg: line 23: 10921 Segmentation fault GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /usr/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-uninstall-rule ${schemas} > /dev/null error: command failed to execute correctly ( 53/344) upgrading gnome-screensaver [####################################################] 100% usr/sbin/gconfpkg: line 18: 10926 Segmentation fault GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /usr/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /usr/share/gconf/schemas/${pkgname}.schemas > /dev/null error: command failed to execute correctly usr/sbin/gconfpkg: line 23: 10931 Segmentation fault GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /usr/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-uninstall-rule ${schemas} > /dev/null error: command failed to execute correctly ( 54/344) upgrading gnome-utils [####################################################] 100% usr/sbin/gconfpkg: line 18: 10936 Segmentation fault GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /usr/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /usr/share/gconf/schemas/${pkgname}.schemas > /dev/null ( 73/344) upgrading kdelibs [####################################################] 100% /tmp/alpm_2CLRhg/.INSTALL: line 1: 10980 Segmentation fault update-mime-database usr/share/mime &>/dev/null error: command failed to execute correctly ( 75/344) upgrading kdebase-runtime [####################################################] 100% /tmp/alpm_eUYelf/.INSTALL: line 1: 10994 Segmentation fault update-mime-database usr/share/mime &>/dev/null error: command failed to execute correctly ( 81/344) upgrading kdepimlibs [####################################################] 100% /tmp/alpm_exajwK/.INSTALL: line 1: 11036 Segmentation fault update-mime-database usr/share/mime &>/dev/null error: command failed to execute correctly ( 82/344) upgrading kdepim-runtime [####################################################] 100% /tmp/alpm_VIW9xn/.INSTALL: line 1: 11050 Segmentation fault update-mime-database usr/share/mime &>/dev/null error: command failed to execute correctly (225/344) upgrading kdeplasma-addons-applets-la... God, I knew this upgrade was going to cause me to lose sleep :p I decided to upgrade another i586 box to compare how the upgrade went on box 2. The boxes are essentially identical. There were a few additional problems on the second box: The first problem caused the update to fail on missing dependencies because phonon wasn't installed. Installing it cured the first problem: [02:16 supersff:/home/david] # pms phonon :: Synchronizing package databases... testing is up to date core is up to date extra is up to date community-testing is up to date community is up to date archlinuxfr is up to date resolving dependencies... warning: provider package was selected (phonon-gstreamer provides phonon-backend) looking for inter-conflicts... Guys,
During update tonight, I received multiple segfaults during system update package installation. Given the kde44beta packages involved, I suspect kde will be dead.
Follow-up: x86_64, 364 packages updated without error. The issue seems to be i686 only. Great job Arch devs :p -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Rankin Law Firm, PLLC 510 Ochiltree Street Nacogdoches, Texas 75961 Telephone: (936) 715-9333 Facsimile: (936) 715-9339 www.rankinlawfirm.com

Is this an i686 box? Arch has no support for i586 packages. If this is i686 you might want to run the apps from the command line and check dmesg.

Yes it is i686. I updated 2 i686 boxes and 1 x86_64 box last night and the i686 boxes were consistent with the segfaults, but reinstall worked OK -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. You reinstalled the whole system or just a package or two?

pacman -Syu On all boxes that resulted in about 900M of download and 2.9G of install. It was ~ 364 packages per box.
