[arch-general] btrfs supported on archlinux
Hello! I'm just interested in when will btrfs filesystem be supported in archlinux in the official repository and on livecd ? It's available now from AUR some related packages, the stable releases can be seen here: http://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Stable_releases Best Regards, Laszlo Papp

Why not submit a feature request?

That main page of that wiki says (http://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Main_Page) Btrfs is under heavy development, and is not suitable for any uses other than benchmarking and review. The Btrfs disk format is not yet finalized, but it will only be changed if a critical bug is found and no workarounds are possible. I guess it will not appear until it is declared stable. Allan

Yeah, Allan! You're right, I got this answer from #btrfs irc on freenode: "I seem to remember there was talk of a 1.0 release in late 2009 / early 2010 but I wouldn't take my word for it". Maybe the best situation with it now, if it takes place in AUR until it will be really stable. Thanks the feedback. Best Regards, Laszlo Papp

Isn't this already supported? $ zgrep -i btrfs /proc/config.gz CONFIG_BTRFS_FS=m CONFIG_BTRFS_FS_POSIX_ACL=y $ uname -a Linux presario 2.6.30-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 31 07:30:28 CEST 2009 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-57 AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux Also see http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22578 http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=15635 -- Shridhar

I guess he was asking about btrfs-progs being in core/extra and on the installation media. I think having the option to mount an existing btrfs is enough for now. You shouldn't [want to] create one from the installation media at this time, since it's not sane to install anything on it unless you are a btrfs developer/tester (in which case you are also capable enough to work around this ;)).

2nd. we added ext4 when the kernel guys declared it 'stable'. that's how i want to do it for nilfs, for btrfs and whichever upcoming FS that would be useful to have on the installation media. Dieter
