[arch-general] Forums search interval
In the forums https://bbs.archlinux.org it's only possible to run one search within 60 seconds (1 minute). This is very annoying if someone has a problem, a search term doesn't give a search result, and a new search with a different search term has to be done. So, could this interval, please, considerably be reduced? A suitable interval would be 10 or 15 seconds. There's also a bug report since more than 8 months now: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22739 It would really be nice if this could be fixed soon. I don't need the forums and its search function so many times, but if I need it I need to do more than one search in a short interval. Heiko

This has nothing to do with the search interval issue. And does Google really need to know everything? And what is the forums' search function for? Heiko

It's just a (very effective) workaround with the added benefit of utilizing google's servers rather than arch's. This discussion probably belongs more in the forums itself (forum and wiki discussion sub-forum) though, since it is about the forum. The forum admin is currently occupied with RL last I heard so not sure how fast a reply you'd get

@Heiko, While I agree with your concern regarding google I don't think an arch forum search reveals too much sensitive (personal) info or any at all. And in this case there's the additional benefit as mentioned above that google search doesn't cause additional server load. Actually in my early days I tried to use forum search, too but then realized the issue you faced and also found that google would give me better hits.

The forum content is public - Google already knows that. Your search isn't - I am using DuckDuckGo now for that reason - they have an excellent non-tracking policy. I used to use "Scroogle" but DuckDuckGo's results seem at least as good as Google's to me now.
And what is the forums' search function for?
Speculation: If it was phpBB, I'd definitely say "because Google hadn't become ubiquitous by then" (Google only started in 1997!). In fact it's FluxBB, which started in 2008 as a fork of PunBB, which might be as old as 2002 or 2003 judging by the footers of these PunBB-related forums: http://www.punres.org/ http://punbb.informer.com/forums/ . ~isaac

Google can't restrict its search to specific fora, or to only search text in the topic title or message body. Nor can it sort by post time, which makes it easy to find recent posts. You might be able to get some or even all of those features with fancy stuff like intitle: and such, but that doesn't seem optimal to me.

You can restrict Google searches to last day / week / month etc.

I'm using bash functions and it works well for me. I surely don't mind better built-in forum search but I have many things to occupy myself with during the search interval. Not optimal but doable.
