[arch-general] Netbook recommendations
So in the next few weeks, I would like to buy a netbook. The market is saturated, so I'd like to ask for some advice here. What do you guys think of the current offerings? What's considered "the best" now-a-days? What kinds of netbooks do Arch users have?

maybe not the answer you're looking for, but i'm going to buy a nokia n900. http://maemo.nokia.com/n900/ I never really saw the need for a netbook as it's not much more portable then a normal laptop. Either I explicitly carry something (then I can just as well take a laptop) or I <will> have a device that literally fits in my pocket so I can take it anywhere, and still do all "mobile computing tasks" I want to do. note: the n900 is not a "smartphone". it's a small portable computer that also has gsm/data features. i run arch under an eeepc 901 (linux version - for the second ssd disk) and i'm perfectly good with it. after some tuning and searching aur for some good packages i settled for gnome with the custom 901 kernel. i would suggest it without a second thought -- Real programmers don't document. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

I don't have one yet, but I've been looking around a few weeks ago. Apart from the usual brands (Asus, Acer, Samsung, Lenovo), my attention was also drawn to this one: http://www.pointofview-online.com/showroom.php?shop_mode=category_homepage&category_id=83 Its display is apparently excellent. Not sure it is easily available in the US, though. Otherwise I'd probably buy a "plain old" EeePC. F

Yeah the more I look at these things, the more an "ordinary" Eee 1000 looks good to me http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASUS_Eee_PC#Eee_1000_series
Well, I dunno what's best these days, I'm more interested in what works. I got a HP2140, as "business" netbook on the pricier side, but with the 5105 released the 2140 should be available for cheaper somewhere. I paid $700 CAD but that includes taxes, our beloved "you just pay that because you are in Canada premium" etc. so in the States that would have been a bit cheaper. And I got highres screen(1366x768, not really necessary I'd say now but nice), also the 6 cell battery, ugly (sticks out) but runs about ~6h. The aluminium casing and the keyboard were the main reasons I got it, but your needs may vary there. Archlinux on it: I kept XP on a 20GB partition, need it to update camera firmware. I installed from USB stick which worked out of the box after i shrank the XP partition. Need broadcom-wl from AUR, works flawlessly, even with N routers. Bluetooth works, I got a mouse running with it. XFCE works nicely, my guess is pretty much every desktop would do it. I have the compositor running, xfwm with shadows, but no wobble effects or anything else. Laptop-mode-tools are installed as well. As far as I can tell I have all hardware working without any problems. here are some excerpts from my rc.local: echo -n 'ondemand' > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor echo -n 'ondemand' > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_governor echo 5 > /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/nmi_watchdog echo 1 > /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/sched_smt_power_savings echo 1500 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs for i in /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/autosuspend; do echo 1 > $i; done echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host1/link_power_management_policy echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host2/link_power_management_policy echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host3/link_power_management_policy echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host4/link_power_management_policy echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host5/link_power_management_policy hcitool hci0 down -T
Since that seems important to you, the keyboard is really nice for its dimensions and it has a hardware button to turn of the trackpad. On Mon, 28 Sep 2009, Tobias Kieslich wrote:

I can with no problem recommend Asus EEE 1000H. No problem setting up. Didn't even have to add any repos. What i have not tried is bluetooth and using and external monitor. What i tried once and do not work (but i do not use it, so it does not bother me) is turning wifi on/off with the fn key. Plus it is wonderful to use i think, as long as you have an external mouse. The touchpad is dreadful. Also have to add that the keyboard is wonderful, and barely make any noise. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQEcBAEBAgAGBQJKwRJmAAoJEKDMaSpKmHJiJqUH/1dvL/M0Ow4kUrCQDRBExzBQ lM3WQ0NH3p1lJR8Ya/BWkxF3BzlSkMJmgx3YjuhNydy11zpw+KUKZE6wO5lK1+nG gKf6zuYnmK9VKMQHWM/h6Om+CVTWsVNhqYHKNzr2U5aZKoKquycT6NauBGdWq3L9 abpCWZiSl+fQlbj/ysKPugDcHFhbkpBEHGINshSw2+d4JW/eyv4zafY8ye0ui+jO klcmk7bvXG6nXF45BhiH0NjbKBrK1bhc98+XDcgpPDvb/+ZxstQlGVD8PXh8KJ/v 9tOhQtrmOif0uT9HQnDQPnydgPOD89LLFQrgQmaHh3opCeHUCfIW9M1eAsb5BmU= =Lwrd -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

It might be worth noting that I cannot stand touchpads or trackballs or thinkpad-nipples in any shape or form. I prefer using an external mouse at all times

Things to consider: * Intel US15W (GMA500, Poulsbo) is more energy effective, but has a bad proprietary driver (free driver is in the works, but I doubt it is usable). * My coworker's girlfriend's Acer Aspire One died. Twice. * Read reviews, there are lots of them. (even http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_netbooks :)) It is better to know small things before buying, otherwise they may become very annoying. * Some models have ridiculously high prices that are not justified by the cost of components. * Don't buy with Windows! :-P -- Roman Kyrylych (Роман Кирилич)

I look around for some time and would probably go with an eeepc. It seems they switched to windows again tough. Netbook based on the ion platform seem to be available now (nvidia graphics) but there likely are still no dual core atom ones. I eventually decided to go for a thinkpad instead, 'just' have to find a model that suits since you can't customise them here... Philipp

I've begun looking in depth at the Eee 1005HA model. Does anyone have experience with this one? I notice there are P, V, and B models (in order of most expensive to least), with slightly varying specs.

I have a 1000H. It's slightly older but almost identical to the HA model. It's been running Arch since I bought it and it runs great. The hotkey power switch for the WiFi card doesn't work, and there seems to be a slightly higher power drain in suspend mode than the XP install that came on it. I'm not sure if that has to do with my suspend configuration or what, but it's worth noting. Anyway, I typically run GNOME...xcompmgr (or compiz) works, but it can get 'stuttery' if you're doing much more than web browsing. Video/media is hit and miss for me - YouTube is watchable, Hulu is not, for example. I'd recommend it if you want to get a netbook. The only hardware gripe I have is the 'mini' right shift key - it's the size of a standard letter key, and it's super annoying especially with how much code I write. It's awesome otherwise.

The shift key is fixed on the 1005 and 1008 models. I've seen this mentioned in a few reviews. http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/1005ha_bk...
I have a 1000 and I really like it. Came with Xandros, but wiped it for Arch ;) 8GB SSD + 32 GB second SSD. I run KDE 4 and develop parallel code on it without any problem. I upgraded to 2GB of ram, really easy to do and it does _not_ void the warranty. I also switched the wireless card. The rt2860 might be good, but its driver is bad. A good example of code dumping... now its does not evolve much: its in staging tree. I changed it for an intel iwl4965. Everything on it works: wireless, bluetooth, external monitor, suspend, etc. I did developped acpi-eeepc-generic for the extra butons and such: written in bash and only depends on acpid. http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=23318 Pros: -Keyboard is better on the 1000 then the 90{0,1}. Not only the size but also the feeling. I had a 901, and the keys near the / were jumpy. -6 cells battery, more then the Acer Aspier One -1.3 Mpixel webcam -Good SSD size: 40GB is more then enough. Fast 8GB is for arch, the slow 32GB is for the rest. -Can run kde 4 with kwin special effects -Everything works (special keys, suspend, rfkill, etc) -Does not come with XP Cons: -The touchpad can be jumpy when using 2 finger scrolls. 2 finger circular is fine though. -Battery might seem big: it comes out a bit. It's less oversize then on the 901 though: when it was open on my lap, it could just fall on its back! -Webcam is a bit dark -Speakers could be louder -Xandros is really bad I love my 1000 ;) 2009/9/28 Aaron Griffin <aaronmgriffin@gmail.com>

I have a a white eee 1005HA-M (matt screen, missing one or two things, e.g. I think it has no bluetooth, which I don't need anyway). It has some good points and some not so good, though I haven't tested everything. Arch installed with no problems at all, except that the ethernet is a bit fiddly - it needs kernel 2.6.31 and it seemed to deactivate itself with the previous buggy drivers, so that the chip wasn't even recognized any more. I haven't tested wireless, but I think that should be no problem. The display seems to 'jump' a bit occasionally (a sort of flash), but it is intel and I hope it will improve ... There are otherwise no problems with the graphics. On heavy load the fan can get quite loud, and I'm not sure how reliably it slows down when the load reduces. Otherwise look and feel is good, the keyboard is fine. Battery life is good. Seems to be good value for the price, on the whole.

I have a Dell Mini 9 and it works well running Arch Linux exclusively. Most things worked out of the box. Had to use the wicki article to get wireless working. Haven't tried bluetooth yet. The Mini 9 is a bit limited, storage wise with only 16GB but it does me and I like the fact there are no fans or disks spinning inside it. Nice and quiet plus pretty good battery life. The HP 2140s look good. A couple of the guys at work have them. They almost look like they could replace a standard laptop if you didn't mind the smallish screen. Think they have 160GB hard drives in them.

Got myself an MSI Wind (Atom, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB HDD) running Arch from second 1 I got it. Everything works great/flawlessly: wireless, wired, camera, mic, audio, USB, SD, ... Fn keys also work great (no need to tweak anything). No need to add repos or anything special to get the hardware up and running, haven't compiled anything, plain old: pacman -S <whatever> Best thing is that it _DOESN'T_ heat up AT ALL (sorry for shouting 0:) I also tried out an Acer ONE with Arch and it heated up so bad you couldn't have it on your lap for more than a couple of minutes >:| BTW: running KDE 4.3 :) Just MHO ;) Rafa -- "We cannot treat computers as Humans. I think Asus are ending this model, so there might be some good sales, but the 1000HE is pretty awesome. Epic battery life (advertised 9.5, real usage ~7-8), surprisingly well built, ok keyboard (not mushy). I'm pretty happy with mine. Only downside is the glossy shell which attracts fingerprints, and the touchpad click button is a little bit stiff, but softens up. Though you dont use touchpad, so no big deal. Comes with a case. If you're looking for a mouse to go with it, logitech have some awesome laser mouse with this tiny little 'nano receiver' that you can just leave plugged into the computer, as it only extends out about 3-4mm. James
Can I give the Toshiba NB100 a shout... another one that is very well built (imho better built than the ASUS ones, which I have broke 2 of) Nice keyboard, 1gb, largish hard disk for a netbook. On Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 11:57 PM, James Rayner <iphitus@iphitus.org> wrote:

Epic battery life (advertised 9.5, real usage ~7-8), surprisingly well built, ok keyboard (not mushy). I'm pretty happy with mine. Only downside is the glossy shell which attracts fingerprints, and the touchpad click button is a little bit stiff, but softens up. Though you dont use touchpad, so no big deal. Comes with a case.
If you're looking for a mouse to go with it, logitech have some awesome laser mouse with this tiny little 'nano receiver' that you can just leave plugged into the computer, as it only extends out about 3-4mm.
