Arch device not showing up when attempting to install
Hello, So my friend is trying to install Arch Linux, and he has ran into an issue I can not find a solution to, the Arch Threads on this issue has the typical "Fixed" one word solution, which doesn't ever explain HOW they fixed it. Does anyone know what causes this following error: /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_202212 device did not show up after 30 seconds. This is after booting to the USB stick and then the grub bootloader, but when attempting to boot to the Arch Installation media the error above occurs. I have tried it with the latest archiso 202301 and it had the same issue, so that is why I tried to use the last version (which I used to install Arch Linux on one of my personal devices, thus I know the iso works) but yet the same issue still occurs. I got a feeling its the flashing tool which is the issue, I always use dd on linux, but my friend uses windows and he has tried both rufus and balena etcher, both of which have the same exact issue. He has cleaned the USB stick using diskpart (wipe partitions) to ensure that the USB is completely clean before flashing to see if that was an issue, same issue still occurs. If anyone knows what could be causing this, it would be very helpful :) Polarian

Arch tries to mount the disk with label ARCH_202212. Probably the disk has another label. Either label the disk ARCH_202212 or in the grub shell mount it manually.

Hello, I told my friend to list the contents of the label directory, and well... only his other drives showed up, there is no installation media label which shows up, only his SSD and HDD partition labels. When inspecting the USB the partitions are there but for some reason the label doesn't show up. I assume the issue is then with the flashing utility, but he has tried both the best flashing utilities on windows, so I am not sure what else to try. It could be possible the USB stick is partially dead, USB sticks are renown for having bad sectors and as soon as you go to read the bad sectors on one of the chips, it fails and causes major issues. Apart from changing to a different USB, is there any other suggestions on how to solve this issue? Thanks, Polarian

Hi, no, but for other usage a broken and/or fraudulent USB stick still might be usable, see https://github.com/AltraMayor/f3 https://github.com/whitslack/flakyflash https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/f3 https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/f3-qt I installed both (f3 and f3-qt, not flakyflash for the FAT or exFAT workaround), but never used these myself. I filed a pending deletion request against https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/f3-test right now. Regards, Ralf

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/USB_flash_installation_medium#In_Windows Note that balena etcher is not mentioned, but rufus is listed (as 4th choice) with a purple tipbox . Try following that tipbox or use of the other listed choices (preferably starting with the first ...) LW

I do not know the reason for your friend's issue, but it might be an option to burn the iso to a CD/DVD? Friedrich
Hello, Sorry I forgot to mention I solved the issue. Turns out it was an issue with the USB stick, switching the USB out for a different one worked fine. Not sure what was wrong with the USB stick, the second partition would not show up when it attempted to boot to it. Thanks, Polarian
