[arch-general] Weird OpenOffice Disappearing Menu and Toolbar Text?
Listmates, I have run into a strange issue with openoffice in Arch. I am using kdemod3 on my Toshiba x86_64 laptop. All Arch packages have been synced and are up to date. The graphics are provided by the radeonhd driver on an ATI M690 (x1200) chipset. In openoffice writer, when you hover over the "style" "font" or "size" combo boxes in the main toolbar, the text in the combo box disappears. The combo box display literally goes blank. If you activate the combo box to see the list of styles, fonts, etc.., the text is then visible. However, when you move your mouse up and down the list, the text under your cursor disappears as well. I have also noticed the same behavior with the pull-down menu text although to a lesser extent. Usually with the menus, only the last 1 or 2 menu entries disappears when a mouseover happens. I have tried with and without compiz - no difference. Has anyone else seen this behavior. It's a very frustrating issue to try and work with blanks in your toolbar. I am also cc'ing this to the radeonhd list in case it is related to the driver. I have the same setup (same laptop) with suse 11.0 with the same openoffice version, but all is fine there. I am trying to determine whether this is an Arch package issue, an openoffice issue, or a radeonhd issue. Since oo works fine on suse 11.0 with the fglrx driver, I think we can eliminate it being an oo issue. That leave the potential of it being an Arch package issue or a radeonhd issue. I don't know how to test to determine which it is. Can anybody think of a test that could be run to narrow it down? I will switch to the radeon driver and test, but beyond that, I can't think of anything else to try. Any thoughts? --- Thanks. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hmm..., This is looking more like an Arch packaging issue. I tested on another Arch x86_64 machine with the same setup but that box has an NVidia 8800GT card in it. Same results. I went ahead and captured a screenshot to provie additional detail: Here is a shot showing blank Style and Font Size combo boxes in oo-writer. The text in the boxes randomly comes back and then disappears again after a hover or an activate of the combo box. Note the cursor is in the Font combo-box so there is no reason the Style or Size boxes should be blank. http://www.3111skyline.com/download/Archlinux/bugs/oo-writer-disappearing-te... Here is a screenshot of the version information: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/Archlinux/bugs/oo-writer-version.jpg If somebody else can confirm, I'll write the bug report. "Where" is the issue again, arch or chakra? Let me know if you have any additional information. Thanks. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Uhh.. "What's up Doc?" "I know that scroowy wabbit is around here somewhere, but where?" Angel, Which bug. I searched "open office" and "openoffice" and either completely missed it or had the search terms wrong. Do you have a link? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Have you tried changing the theme? In my case (Gnome), I can't see some dropdown boxes when I hover them on my current theme. Best regards, Paulo Santos

Paulo, Not yet, but I'll give that a try. I got rid of the domino theme and I'm just using the standard plastik theme. This should be theme independent though. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Not sure that it's Arch or kdemod specifically, as much as your specific configuration. I'm running a similar setup as you (kdemod3), but don't seem to have the problem: http://www.darose.net/OOScreenShot.png DR

Thanks DR, I'll play around with the them and GTK/QT Style settings and see if I can make it work. How are you setting your KDE Control Panel -> Appearance -> GTK Styles and Fonts? -- David C. Well, I have the menus and combo-boxes stable now. In QT Config, I set the style to clearlooks and also to GTK+ and the disappearing text stopped. Dunno why the plastik style causes the problem but I have a workable solution now. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I've get a similar issue some time ago with konqueror. No text was displayed in text area when I was tipping, but the text come back magically when I select it. I have change the font, and every thing come back right. I think that it's a "font of the color of the background" issue. You should have change the font, or the font's color when playing with theme. This will have make the problem disappear.
