[arch-general] Arch shutdown because of firefox
hi all, I am a newbie for ArchLinux. My computer often shuts down suddenly when I browse web site. It brings me to TTY and said "The system is going down for system halt NOW!". I found that is because of the crash of flash plugin of firefox. And my question is why the crash of firefox can cause my computer shuts down? PS. my system environment: Arch + awesome, no DE. Thanks! hc

Hi, Can you another Browser(Like google-chrome) for a while and see if the problem repeats. It will help to isolate the issue -- Regards, Gaurish Sharma www.gaurishsharma.com

Could the computer be getting too hot? I had this happen. I have to keep the fans clean. -- Michael Wigren michael.wigren@gmail.com

It's interesting that your system is "crashing" so gracefully. Are you overheating? Try creating a new firefox profile and see if it's affected. Try creating a new user with a new profile and see if it's affected.

Frankly, I can't make any connection between firefox and shutting down. Shutting down the computer would mean a severe privilege violation. Are you running hal, or using any display manager? They are the only ones that may allow you to shut down unless you are root.
yes, I run hal, but don't use display manager. Your answer inspired me, and I will check something about hal immediately. Thanks! On Tue, May 11, 2010 at 02:20:17PM +0200, Thomas Bchler wrote:

Even if the user is allowed to use hal to initiate a shutdown, it would still be necessary to exploit a security weakness in firefox that would allow an attacker to execute arbitrary commands. And a matching exploit would have to be on any website that triggers the shutdown ... this all sounds very unlikely.

I'm willing to bet that this is no exploit ad in-fact a bug at some point in the stack. A couple years ago I found I could almost crash xorg at will with my questionable C code(I was just learning C) and a couple time the xorg crash resulted in a reboot/shutdown. Does it persist with another xorg driver?

Hi, Well it seesm like you are not the only one with this problem. I think I experience the same, although with a slightly different setup and therefore alternate consequences. I am running gnome on my 32bit Arch Linux machine, with a ati graphics-card. Sometimes firefox crashes and gnome restarts. No complete shutdown in my case, but I have to login again. However this only happens with the flash-plugin being enabled. Unfortunately I wasn't able to reproduce the problem, it occurs without any pattern (At least none which I could discover). However, i therefore installed flashblock on firefox. Since then I havn't experienced this problem again. Therefore I think that your shutdown (my gnome restart) is definitly caused by flashplugin+firefox itself. Overheating or strange scripts, aren't the problem in my case (I am sure, since it is a pretty standard install and the temps are ok). Currently I was waiting for the next update to eventually fix the problem (since I can live without flash). But eventually someone has some clues of how to troubleshoot this (Is there any firefox stacktrace???). Thanks, any advice is appreciated Benedikt

There is a huge difference between your problem and the other one: Yours is perfectly explained by a bug in the X server or your display driver (when this happened, look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old for a backtrace), which would be triggered by the flashplugin. The original problem involves a graceful system shutdown, which is not explained by any bug I can think of.

Have you checked the log files? Especially /var/log/messages I'd boot in single user-mode after a shutdown and check the log files -- damjan
