I would try to arch-chroot into the broken system and reinstall the kernel package with pacman. I'd think that should fix it. -- Maarten

This, or use pacman's --root option from the live environment. Doug

If you get a chance, and aren't completed disgusted by the time you've tried all the rescue methods, report back on your experiences if possible.

Assumed the OP has got a multi-boot it's very easy. [weremouse@moonstudio ~]$ sudo systemd-nspawn -qD /mnt/archlinux [sudo] password for weremouse: Failed to create directory /mnt/archlinux/sys/fs/selinux: No such file or directory Failed to create directory /mnt/archlinux/sys/fs/selinux: No such file or directory [root@archlinux ~]# pacman -Si linux Repository : core Name : linux Version : 4.1.5-1 Description : The Linux kernel and modules Architecture : x86_64 URL : http://www.kernel.org/ Licenses : GPL2 Groups : base Provides : kernel26=4.1.5 Depends On : coreutils linux-firmware kmod mkinitcpio>=0.7 Optional Deps : crda: to set the correct wireless channels of your country Conflicts With : kernel26 Replaces : kernel26 Download Size : 56.44 MiB Installed Size : 73.44 MiB Packager : Tobias Powalowski <tpowa@archlinux.org> Build Date : Tue 11 Aug 2015 03:42:28 PM CEST Validated By : MD5 Sum SHA256 Sum Signature [root@archlinux ~]# cat /etc/issue Arch Linux \r (\l) [root@archlinux ~]# logout [weremouse@moonstudio ~]$ cat /etc/issue Ubuntu Wily Werewolf (development branch) \n \l In the end a "rescue mode" using a live media isn't really much more work.

Would that work correct with the post install/upgrade hooks running mkinitcpio? I would chroot anyway, to make sure. -- Maarten

Ah, so pacman/alpm itself chroots into the root directory for the post install/upgrade scripts? That is useful to know. -- Maarten
