[arch-general] Kernel 2.6.30 on EEE and KMS
Hello all, I'm installing Arch on an EEE. Following the wiki, I installed from a core image which hase 2.6.30, blocked its update, and then updated all the rest. Starting X I get this: (EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected. Does this mean I'll need 2.6.32 anyway (and hence no Wifi) or are there other solutions ? TIA, -- FA O tu, che porte, correndo si ? E guerra e morte !

The current intel drivers require kernel mode setting. You can activate it with 2.6.30, but I wouldn't recommend it, as it is very buggy in that old version. Put "options i915 modeset=1" into /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf and add "intel_agp i915" to the MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf. This will probably allow you to use X, but as I said: BUGGY.

Why aren't you using the new kernel? I just installed Arch on an Eee 701, and everything worked fine with the latest kernel.

Just did this, and X worked immediately. :-) Still have to get the wireless to work, that will be for later tonight. BTW, this is on a 1000H Grazie & ciao, -- FA O tu, che porte, correndo si ? E guerra e morte !

Grazie & ciao,
What's the wireless chip in this thing? Maybe it is already supported by compat-wireless or even 2.6.33 release candidates.

rt2860, which is the same as in the 901. 'iwlist wlan0 scan' detects the network, but I've not been able to configure it into a working state either manually or using netcfg (2.2.1) So there maybe there is indeed a problem with 2.6.32 as mentioned on the wiki page for the 901. Improved support for the rt28XX devices by Ralink has been commited to the linux-wireless tree AFAIK. You should try if you can get better results with compat-wireless.

I've got it working with testing/netcfg (and probably made some stupid mistakes before). It still files some complaints in /var/log/messages.log but otherwise seems to work OK ! Ciao, -- FA O tu, che porte, correndo si ? E guerra e morte !
Except for wireless card (damn rt2860... I changed mine for an intel 4965!) the eeepc line is pretty good with linux, and specially with arch ;) Make sure to check out acpi-eeepc-generic from AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=23318 Or even better, update to latest subversion ( http://code.google.com/p/acpi-eeepc-generic/source/checkout ) and if you found something wrong, open an issue on google code page: http://code.google.com/p/acpi-eeepc-generic/issues/list Good luck! ;) 2010/2/15 <fons@kokkinizita.net>
