Looking at https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/getting-started, there are top and bottom panels. Does launching a terminal, such as xterm, running pacman right from the start related to your question? I guess what you want is doable from Xfce running with X. I did not delve into the details myself. -- u34

In years past, Arch recommended making software changes and updates from a standard terminal, not within a desktop. That said, I have frequently violated that rule without ill effect (though I shutdown the desktop if I have a machine needing a month of updates or so). If you want to launch pacman in an xterm within xfce, just follow the xdg desktop file spec and create a launcher, e.g. https://askubuntu.com/q/436891/1423782 (it's just the StackExchange site with a short/concise writeup) -- David C.
