Does ~./xbindkeysrc not work? That's what I do. However, not in Gnome. Example:

"mpc toggle" XF86AudioPlay

"mpc stop" XF86AudioStop

"mpc next" XF86AudioNext

"mpc prev" XF86AudioPrev
