[arch-general] Packages getting smaller?
Hi, I've noticed recently that a lot of upgrades have been making the total installed size go down. Has something changed in the packaging, like compressed binaries or a new version of GCC or something? I'm just curious. Brendan
My guess is that they switched from adding features to removing bloat, which results in a smaller filesize. On Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 10:40 PM, Brendan Long <self@brendanlong.com> wrote:

It's just strange that it's happening so consistently, like again today: Targets (7): dbus-1.4.20-1 dbus-core-1.4.20-2 dbus-python-1.0.0-1 mkinitcpio-0.8.7-2 qt-4.8.1-2 xorg-server-1.12.1-1 xorg-server-common-1.12.1-1 Total Download Size: 21.59 MiB Total Installed Size: 96.40 MiB Net Upgrade Size: -0.93 MiB On 04/13/2012 08:38 PM, Zachary (Asian) wrote:

My guess is they are shipping less embedded libs. Em 14 de abril de 2012 14:02, Brendan Long <self@brendanlong.com> escreveu:

It looks like they are being compressed with upx. Muhammed Uluyol On Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 12:08 PM, Victor Silva <vfbsilva@gmail.com> wrote:

Well, gcc-4.7 just was released... So the initial question probably contains the answer.

Well, there are quite a few upgrades (meaning a change in the upstream version) within your showed output. The tendency for upstream releases is to get bigger, so when updating a bunch of them (just like you did), there is absolutely no surprise when the resulting installed size will get bigger, too. However I've also noticed the drop in size for some packages. I will have to investigate this deeper, but there seem to be some (huge) improvements coming along with the gcc release. Just another reason to love Arch. I guess we are among the firsts who made the switch ;). Best regards, Karol Babioch
