Pete (sent from webamil on the lappy cus main machine is futzed ) can you drop to a shell? if so, get some internet connection and retrieve the old packages from http://arm.konnichi.com/2012/01/26/ you'll find the kde packages in extra. you can just install them with a bit bash-hacking (awk, sed, wget, etc). if you want hints, just ask.
Hi .. It seems for some strange reason the Hard disk may be full well the / partition at least si the install may not have completed now have to think about this one see if i can resize the / partition i have space on /home need to shrink that and extend / good fun .. not . erm, small advice: there is strong bottom post policy on this list. dont make a discussion of ist, happend often enough… just wanted to have said. your prob: how about just removing kde, so you get space for repairing it? maybe a # pacman -Scc gets you some more free space (emptiing the packege cache)
yes i appologise for the top posting i have nothing in that way of mail clients running postiong via yahoo's web mail system and it does not allow me to bottom post very sorry for the un needed hassles i hate top posting my self many appolagies to the list . I hit the same problem while updating through KDE RC. I've filled a wish in KDE bug tracker (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=290778) to alert the user on start if /, /tmp or /home is full as it affects KDE applications way out of proportions as compared to GTK+ applications for example. I'll try to work on something if I find the time to do so... Tim
Hi Tim . Glad i am not the only one , I have a spare drive i am thinking of moving /usr to it see if it will work like that .. As long as there where no off-list information, January 2012 at http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-general/ should solve this issue. Regards, Ralf

you could install (if necessary) and use parted from a console to do the resizing.

For the future you should make backups using tar, when booted to another Linux. Don't sync the backups, always make complete new ones and keep them for a while, so you are able to go back to different versions, just in case you shouldn't notice serious bugs directly after making changes. I'm doing it by a "dirty" script, regarding to globbing it at least isn't wise to use the asterisk. #!/bin/sh # sh ./bak_arch BACKUP_NAME_ADD="2012-Jan-snap-16.bak" clear echo "We are going to backup Arch Linux" echo "Ensure that /media/archlinux and /media/data2 are mounted." echo "Press enter to continue." read any_pushed_key cd /media/archlinux clear echo "Arch Linux backup starting now." tar czf /media/data2/archlinux/archlinux_$BACKUP_NAME_ADD.tar.gz * clear cd /media/data2/archlinux ls archlinux_*.tar.gz -hAl exit 0

Pete, Also, your package cache is in /var/cache/pacman/pkg. Unless you have done something to remove them, then all your 4.7.4 packages are still there. You can simply do an 'ls -al /var/cache/pacman/pkg/*4.7.4*' to confirm. You can downgrade using 'pacman -U' <file list of 4.7.4 packages> I wrote a couple of scripts to handle cleaning /var/cache/pacman/pkg and moving old versions off the / partition to the /home partition to keep the space on / free and to keep exact copies of my prior working packages. Currently the previous versions of packages are moved to /home/backup/pkg-1 (then pkg-2 and finally pkg-del) Grab the scripts at: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/arch/scripts/fduparch.sh http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/arch/scripts/fduppkg Just put both in /usr/local/bin and call fduparch.sh as root. The scripts are reasonably commented. fduparch.sh is the wrapper script that just calls fduppkg successively to move old versions of packages to the directories specified in the array 'DIRLIST'. After each 'pacman -Syu', I just call 'fduparch.sh'. Just run 'fduparch.sh -h' to get a better description. HTH. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
