Such problems usually appear when you don't have a soundcard with multiple channels in combination with OSS. Somehow dmix doesn't mix with OSS.

Have you tried $ mplayer -ao alsa yourmultimedia.file mplayer defaults to oss and gives: [AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy Failed to initialize audio driver 'oss' Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound. Audio: no sound

Have you tried $ mplayer -ao alsa yourmultimedia.file Thank you. That solved the problem!

My situation it's pretty random. I have two soundcards, one cheap on board and another cheap pci. With the on board there's no trouble playing two sound streams at the same time nor any other complication. On Board: 00:07.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP65 High Definition Audio (rev a1) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 8286 Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 20 Memory at dddf8000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel But while using the pci card the situation turns random. Some times while playing music with Rhythmbox and watching youtube videos one of them starts to fail and I just hear buzz. Sometimes it works fine. Other times (with Ryhthmbox running and music stoped) when I play videos with VLC I hear no sound at all, but others times it works fine. Hi, I see, you have hda and hdmi codec modules loaded. Can it be, that your issues are related to FS#15829 (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/15829)? When I had this issue, there were a few audio programs, mainly KDE software, which didn't care about the sound card numbers and the module's index option and found the real audio card by themselves, but not every audio software was able to do this.
