[arch-general] Python2-gimp - what functionality was lost?
All, I updated gimp tonight and received: ( 6/19) upgrading gimp [######################################] 100%
The python2 plugin support is disabled, you will need to install this separately if you need it, e.g. the python2-gimp package in the AUR.
Looking at several bugs about python2 and gimp and it seem that gimp is not removing python2 during gimp 2.10: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1737933 Do we know what functionality was lost when we removed python2 support for it? I don't use it that often, but do use it fairly thoroughly when I do. From that standpoint, is there a list of what now isn't part of gimp without python2? That would help in knowing whether the AUR package is needed. Seems strange the AUR package was posted and orphaned on 2020-03-18? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=253710 This is purely related to the pygtk-based plugin support. (Plugins that use C, scheme, etc. are not affected.)
Seems strange the AUR package was posted and orphaned on 2020-03-18?
The person who uploaded it was interested in providing a solution for the forum user whose python/pygtk based plugin no longer worked -- and in demonstrating how that solution could be achieved in the general case. The person who uploaded it was not interested in providing long-term maintenance of that AUR package, therefore, it was immediately orphaned. Seems pretty clear-cut to me. -- Eli Schwartz Bug Wrangler and Trusted User

Thank you Eli -- it clear now. From an overview I deduced as much but didn't have the back-story. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
