[arch-general] Donate to Arch Linux
Hi everyone! As far as I can see, there's only one option for non-US-citizens to donate money to the project. This one option is a credit card [1]. As you may or may not be aware: Most (european) german citizens do not possess and wish not possess a credit card and in some cases are not able to possess a credit card. Are other donation options planned in the future? How soon? I would even send an envelope with €urobills in it via AirMail, though I'd prefer something more secure like Bitcoin or (I know many see it as the devil) PayPal. tl,dr: I want to send money to Arch Linux, but can't. To jump on the bandwaggon, if that was any simpler with said limitations, I would have donated already, too... cheers! mar77i
Hi :) I never noticed that there is a donate option on the homepage.
From Germany it seems to be very simple to donate:
https://www.archlinux.org/donate/ > how donations work http://www.spi-inc.org/donations/ > Donations in Europe can be done through our partner in Germany, ffis e.V. If you are interested in using their bank account (to save international money transfer costs), please check the instructions for donating to ffis e.V.. > http://www.ffis.de/Verein/spi-en.html "Note about Donations When making a donation, please always notify the association at donation (at) ffis.de so we can track the transaction properly. Below is information about the ffis e.V. account: Bank code: 280 501 00 Bank: Landessparkasse zu Oldenburg Account number.: 10126407" I only wonder about two things. 1. Do they care for "Arch Linux" as reference? 2. Will it be anonymous if wanted or is everybody listed as "Past donor" at https://www.archlinux.org/donate/ ? It's very strange to list people who donated, at least if it's unwanted by somebody who donated. If I donate to what ever and I want my friends to donate too, than I send a request privately and let my friends know that I donated, but I never ever would spend when it would be made public in general. If I want to have it public, I'll do it myself. Regards, Ralf

1. Do they care for "Arch Linux" as reference?
You quoted the following bit: "When making a donation, please always notify the association at donation (at) ffis.de so we can track the transaction properly." In the email, just tell SPI: "The transfer of XXX euros I just did from YYY bank account is intended to support Arch Linux development." And the money will go where you want... You might additionally want to put "Arch Linux" in the comment field of the wire transfer.
2. Will it be anonymous if wanted or is everybody listed as "Past donor" at https://www.archlinux.org/donate/ ?
If you wish the donation to be anonymous, just say so in the email.

So first you ask whether donors can be anonymous and, even before getting an answer, you get carried away assuming that they can't?!? Most people are proud of sponsoring projects they like, and putting their names up is a way for the project to thank and acknowledge them back. If that's not your thing, you just have to say so... Cheers. -- Gaetan

Thank you, it's not my native language. Btw. there's a German Arch Linux account, so I won't use the SPI, when I'm able to donate. https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Spenden JFTR in Germany it's more common to make anonymous donations and surprise :) !!! "Alle Spenden sind anonym." translated "All donations are anonymous." The usage of the donations is documented at https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Spendenkonto-Umsätze Important data for Germans: "Rechtlich handelt es sich um private Schenkungen. Unfortunately I can't donate yet or in the close future :(. Regards, Ralf

Uhhhm.... To me it is not apparent if this is the same thing or if this is archlinux.de specific, and I haven't found the section which would clarify. Just because that's Pierre's account there, I *tend* to believe it's the same thing, but I'm struggling to find more indication for that. Has Anyone Really Been Far Even as Decided to Use Even Go Want to do Look More Like? cheers! mar77i

Interesting, I thought I made that clear. These donations are only used to pay for the server that power archlinux.de and related services. If you donate through SPI this money is used to pay the bills for the archlinux.org-Server. Greetings, Pierre -- Pierre Schmitz, https://pierre-schmitz.com

I made a donation (from the UK via credit card) a few months ago but my name has not appeared on the list, although I did not request anonymity (no facility to do so as far as I remember). The SPI, who handles those things for us, has to let us know who has donated so we can update the website, and I do not believe they do this very often. I'll see what we can do about this. -- Gaetan

Do your banks provide a (free) service via e-banking where you create a virtual credit card for each online transaction? My bank provides that and I don't need to have a credit card to be able to use the service. -- Mauro Santos
