Thunar, the file manager doesn't allow to split the window and requires Gnome's virtual crap to provide mount functionality and so on and so forth. I recommend to take a look at openbox (jwm is also not bad) and to use it with roxterm, lxpanel or fbpanel, and spacefm, IOW instead of using a desktop environment, just use a window manager. 2 Cents, Ralf
I can recommend using xfce with pcmanfm as the file manager instead of thunar. I prefer it for a variety of reasons, including its integration with file-roller. I also use udiskie to manage thumb drive mounts. --Sean

If I wouldn't use command line, then I would use engrampa instead of file-roller, since I like menus. FWIW AUR provides engrampa-thunar. However, I agree that spacefm is the better choice and even if I would use Xfce4, then I would use roxterm instead of xfce4-terminal.

File-roller is definitely a GUI application. I mentioned it because you can trigger it directly from pcmanfm (e.g. right-click -> Compress...). And I'm partial to termite for terminal emulator, but that's not really DE/WM specific. --Sean
