Can't connect to a 5GHz WiFi network
Greeting everyone, Since this Tuesday, my Arch machine, a ThinkPad T490, can't connect to a specific 5GHz WiFi network called gcat. The network is working fine because my work laptop, a ThinkPad X1 also running Arch, and my Android phone both connect to gcat just fine. Also, I can connect to a 2.4GHz network from the same access point. I don't think this is a problem with 5GHz networks. When I create a 5GHz hotspot with my mobile phone, this machine connects to it successfully. Initially, I couldn't see gcat in wifi-menu. So, I deleted the netctl profile for gcat and restarted the machine, after which I saw gcat again in wifi-menu. When I enter the password, wifi-menu tells me that it failed to connect to gcat. The netctl profile: Description='Automatically generated profile by wifi-menu' Interface=wlp0s20f3 Connection=wireless Security=wpa ESSID=gcat IP=dhcp Key=*** Following is the output of dmesg | grep iwlwifi: [ 9.081448] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: enabling device (0000 -> 0002) [ 9.090125] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: Detected crf-id 0x3617, cnv-id 0x20000302 wfpm id 0x80000000 [ 9.090148] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: PCI dev 02f0/0074, rev=0x351, rfid=0x10a100 [ 9.104916] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: api flags index 2 larger than supported by driver [ 9.104934] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: TLV_FW_FSEQ_VERSION: FSEQ Version: 89.3.35.37 [ 9.105939] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: loaded firmware version 77.bd067429.0 QuZ-a0-hr-b0-77.ucode op_mode iwlmvm [ 9.754739] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: Detected Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz, REV=0x351 [ 9.877459] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: Detected RF HR B3, rfid=0x10a100 [ 9.943639] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: base HW address: d8:3b:bf:b5:ea:b9 [ 9.965714] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3 wlp0s20f3: renamed from wlan0 [ 51.059576] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: Registered PHC clock: iwlwifi-PTP, with index: 1 Following is the result of journalctl | grep gcat: Nov 16 09:21:28 asciimx network[544]: Profile 'wlp0s20f3-gcat' does not exist or is not readable Nov 16 09:21:28 asciimx systemd[1]: netctl@wlp0s20f3\x2dgcat.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE Nov 16 09:21:28 asciimx systemd[1]: netctl@wlp0s20f3\x2dgcat.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'. Since this Tuesday, my Arch machine, a ThinkPad T490, can't connect to a specific 5GHz WiFi network called gcat.
I recommend checking that the regulatory domain of your laptop matches that of the hotspot. When they don't match, the hotspot can advertise on channels that are disabled on the laptop. The wiki has a note about this, as well as how to set it: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Network_configuration/Wireless#Respecting_t... Best, Jaron

Thanks for the advice. Following the relevant section in the Wiki, I installed wireless-regdb, did the reboot, uncommented regdomain for my location. However, I still can't connect to the AP. The difference in what channels are enabled might be the problem. On the laptop that can connect to the hotspot, can you see what channel the hotspot is advertised on? If it is one of the ones disabled on your other laptop, you may need a more permissive (but "wrong") regulatory domain set. Jaron

The AP is using frequency 5240MHz. This frequency is disabled on the T490 according to the output of iw list | grep -A 15 Frequencies:. I am in Singapore, and according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels, 5240MHz can be used here without restrictions. Additionally, I don't understand why this kicked in this week while working fine for about 2 months now. The output of wpa_cli status, which is what I ran on the working machine to find the frequency, is: Selected interface 'wlp0s20f3' bssid=9c:53:22:fc:16:22 freq=5240 ssid=gcat id=0 mode=station wifi_generation=6 pairwise_cipher=CCMP group_cipher=CCMP key_mgmt=WPA2-PSK wpa_state=COMPLETED ieee80211ac=1 -- Regards, Sadeep PGP: 103BF9E3E750BF7E

Great, so we know the problem! The ArchWiki page I linked earlier [1] has some advice on checking whether the firmware of your laptop is enforcing a hardcoded regulatory domain. This might be the case if the laptop's hardware was originally intended for another country.

Probably the access point changed its frequency. If you can configure the access point, you can set its channel to something supported. Jaron [1]: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Network_configuration/Wireless#Respecting_t...

This is unlikely, because this is my home router. I didn't change the frequency there. I will investigate how to enable the frequency in the iw list along the lines you suggested, thanks! Although, is it normal that all the 5G frequencies are disabled like this? -- Regards, Sadeep PGP: 103BF9E3E750BF7E

Is there anything particular you would like to see from wpa_supplicant? If I try to connect to gcat (SSID) by issuing the following command, it fails to connect with the error "wlp0s20f3: No suitable network found": # wpa_supplicant -i wlp0s20f3 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/example.conf -d This is because it can't find gcat in the scan results. Could you generate config with wpa_passphrase before?
Sure, trying to connect with wpa_passphrase:
$ wpa_supplicant -B -i interface -c <(wpa_passphrase gcat ***)
outputs the following:
