thanks bram, i had the user added to audio group, the problem i found was that in alsamixer there are 2 sections labeled 'internal' and i had them both turned up and when unmuting the 'speaker' section all i got was this loud beep. so with some experimenting i was able to silence the beep and actually get sound to come out of the speaker : ) -- ( adam stokes ) || ( adam.stokes@gmail.com )
