[arch-general] xdm and awesomewm incompatibilty
Hi, I see that xdm and awesome wm dont go well together. It used to work well before. I see after recent package update. awesome wm crashes often. After killing xdm, it is back normal again. Has anyone else experienced this ? If xdm is buggy, then can someone suggest a good login manager for X ? I see gdm brings in gnome-shell and loads of other packages which is not directly related to login manager. What i am looking for is just the login manager and its dependecies and not the entire DE. I assume kdm does the same thing. The awesome wm & xdm version in my pc is: awesome 3.5.1-3 xorg-xdm 1.1.11-4 with regards, ashwin

$ pacman -Qi lightdm | grep Depe Depends On : libxklavier polkit systemd Installed here, it might have it's weak points too, but since I didn't drop it, I guess I can recommend it. Regards, Ralf

If you can cope with GTK+3 being pulled, try LightDM https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lightdm Szymon Szydełko

You don't need gtk3 to use lightdm, it depends on the "greeter": https://www.archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/lightdm-gtk2-greeter/

IIRC I used some default greeter, before I installed a greeter. I guess it's possible to get some simple greeter, without installing an additional greeter.

It failed to work without a greeter. I installed lightdm-gtk3-greeter and now it is working. This greeter does not bring in lot of dependencies as in the case of gdm. The dependecies for this package are just lightdm and gtk. Only issue i am seeing is icon are missing and it shows a `x` in its place. I see it has xdmcp support (cool). Thanks for all for showing me lightdm. with regards, ashwin

The simplest alternative would be slim. It worked fine with awesome and now works fine with i3, for me at least. Regards, Mattias

I have the exact same versions and do not experience any crashes. rgds, pierre
