[arch-general] No menu icons on XFCE4 desktop
Hello, since I've not updated my system since some weeks, I thought it would be a good time to do so - with two results: 1. My desktop theme changed. 2. The menu icons have gone. Well, while the first is not a real problem (I should be able to find an appropriate icon theme, but I'll look for that later), I don't know why the menu icons have gone, so I don't know where to start searching for a solution. I even didn't find something related when search the internet. :-/ However, I found two sub-folders in /usr/share/icons/Adwaita for gtk-2.0 and gtk-3.0, but only the first one contains any assets - maybe that's the problem? Any idea? Kind regards Peter
Have you searched for the keyboard shortcut to enable the whisker menu? I used xfce4 for a short time and stumbled on that one by accident. Since I've never had sight in this lifetime and when that menu came up for me with my screen reader running I never saw if it had icons on it. Hello, sorry, I first had to look for that menu what it is ... but it seems, it's not what I want. I'd prefer to stay with xfce's default menu - but with icons. Another problem for me is about font configuration: it seems, Java doesn't find the appropriate fonts, and so does NetBeans. There seems to be sth. heavily broken, but I don't know what it is. Hi, I can't comment on the issues you are experiencing. However, since Arch is a rolling release, configurations require maintenance from timer to time. Actually it's no big deal, when upgrading you get informed about new configurations. Usually even if you need to do something in $HOME. Configurations outside of $HOME are saved as pacnew, if they divert from existing configurations. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Pacman/Pacnew_and_Pacsave#.pacnew I tend to compare and edit configuration files using https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/meld/ . Hth, Ralf
Updating usually haven't been a problem. I'll have to check the protocols in deep then - I haven't even been aware of pacman.log until know ... Especially, I've to look at these further - maybe, that update became only effective after my latest restart: [2021-04-10T13:48:20+0200] [ALPM] running 'desktop-menu-upgrades.hook'... [2021-04-10T13:48:59+0200] [ALPM] running 'fontconfig.hook'... I'll try further tomorrow. Kind regards Peter Am 20.06.21 um 21:02 schrieb Ralf Mardorf via arch-general:

After some investigation, it seems to be caused by some missing GTK updates/configuration changes: - I've installed GTK2 and GTK3 - I just noticed GTK4 is available, but not installed - Only 3 themes are available, which seem to be integrated with GTK3+ recently. So /usr/share/themes probably even isn't read - with about 130 themes installed. Why could that happen, and how can I fix it? Now I know, what causes the problems: $ ps ax | grep xsettingsd 1212 tty1 Z 0:00 [xsettingsd] <defunct> So, where can I find the error detail message? Regards P. Am 21.06.21 um 20:00 schrieb Peter Nabbefeld via arch-general:

I've now found out, I had 2 settings managers installed (xsettingsd and xfce4-settings); obviously this situation results in conflicts. I wonder, why I didn't have problems before - probably xfce4-settings is a new dependency or it was working different before? However, icons are working again, and while I have still only 3 themes shown, they do actually change colors of windows etc. Kind regards Peter Am 21.06.21 um 21:56 schrieb Peter Nabbefeld via arch-general:
