[arch-general] How to change gdm greeter theme?
Guys, This used to be easy with gdmsetup, but in gdm 2.30 -- that's gone. I've been to the gnome sites, I've googled it, I've looked through the gdm package and I'm stumped. -- What's the trick? Do the themes for the older version of the greeter even work anymore? If so, how? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. It's gotten quite a bit worse, usability wise, I think. Oh, and if you find out how to change the background image for the screensaver login then please let me know. I've looked in vain for instructions on how to get rid of the ugly green background that comes as default. /M -- Magnus Therning (OpenPGP: 0xAB4DFBA4) magnus@therning.org Jabber: magnus@therning.org http://therning.org/magnus identi.ca|twitter: magthe

There is a script, I think its in AUR something like GDM-Changer or something like that. I installed it on my box at home but it doesn't work. That might be because I do not use sudo though? Other than that I've tried all the so called success story's all have failed for me :-(

The GDM wiki page gives instructions for that, basically running gnome-appearance-properties as the gdm user.

How do you get around this: gdm:x:120:120:Gnome Display Manager:/var/lib/gdm:/sbin/nologin su, gksu say account is not available. Do you just change the :sbin/nologin part? How -- safely? I've never messed with something like that before. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. This is what I use to do, if something is wrong somebody please correct me. Change :/sbin/nologin to :/bin/bash, then, as root # su gdm $ dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties Configure according to your needs, then edit /etc/passwd again and change :/bin/bash to :/sbin/nologin. -- Javier Adrián Ortiz de la Tabla

It's enough to do (no need to change the shell): # su -m gdm $ dbus..... Armando

untested, but i think you could also use su gdm -c, so: su gdm -c "dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties" HTH mvg, Guus

As i know, changing of gdm 2.28 theme was not supported, yet, but this program should help doing some configuring:(like change background, icon, autologin, banner text...) http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33884 gdm2setup TIPs: i found i bug of gdm2setup, if /usr/share/images/xsplash directory not existed, gdm2setup will fail to renew the background image. you can simple create this directory to solve this.
