Why not uwsgi or gunicorn? They are usually much better.

Hi Anatol and others: Thanks for your guidance. After inspecting the error_log, I determined that my problem was coming from encoding. I changed the str(sys.version) to sys.version.encode() in wsgi_instructions (see link below) and the sample program worked.
