[arch-general] Boot Device Didn't Show Up
Every time I try and install Arch Linux 2009.08 Netinst .ISO disk on my newly built PC hardware, I get the following error: Waiting for boot device... Error: Boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds... Falling back to interactive prompt. You can try and fix the problem manually, log out when you're finished. ramfs$ The same ISO works perfect on my laptop and other PC's but on my personal $1,000 PC, it doesn't. I can't figure this out. I also tried the 2009.08 Core disk and I get the same thing as with the 'Netinst' disk. I don't know if it's because I have a S-ATA DVD-ROM drive on this machine. I can boot from disk and see the Arch install options...even play "Space Invaders". But when I select the install Arch Linux options, it boots into a 'Live' environment and then hangs on the error above. Someone please help...

The other machines you're talking about, do they too have SATA DVD-ROM drives ? If yes, then try out with USB install image, provided it is supported by your $1000 PC. Most modern boxes after around 2005 do. -- Nilesh Govindarajan Site & Server Adminstrator www.itech7.com

The machines that they do install fine on are Dell Optiplex 755's and yes, they too have SATA optical drives. I will download and install the 2009.08*.img. I will give it a shot. Thanks for the suggestion!

If those still doesn't work you could try archboot iso: ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/iso/archboot greetings tpowa -- Tobias Powalowski Archlinux Developer & Package Maintainer (tpowa) http://www.archlinux.org tpowa@archlinux.org

See this bug report: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/17231?project=6 You should be able to continue booting by entering these commands at the ramfs$ prompt: udevadm trigger exit It's not a fix but a workaround. And this bug really needs to be fixed because PCs nowadays are usually SATA only systems. Greetings, Heiko

That bug link is the exact same issue I am having. I agree that this workaround is nice but the fact that the bug has been opened for so long is disappointing. I hope they acknowledge this issue and fix it with the next release of Arch... Thank you for that info! I didn't know that bug existed!

I ran the command listed above and it just throws me into some kind of loop but I never got past to the point I could attempt an installation. I will try the USB drive installation.
