Hey, Two things, first Seshu, I can't seem to authenticate to SVN -- I can log in with ssh (public key still not working, but that's not important), but svn rejects the same password as I use for ssh. Second, how do we address the pkgrel variables in arch64 packages? Do they borrow from the 32 bit rel, or should we start over from 1? For example, if I add a package that I copied the PKGBUILD from 32 bit current, and it is at pkgrel 5, do I put it in at pkgrel 5, or pkgrel 1? I'm gessing 1. Oh, a third thing, now that I'm here.... putting compiled binaries in the httpd directory, are we supposed to remove previous versions of the binary, or does that get done automatically with some script? thank ye, Dusty

c14n has kindly offered to host genesis.blogdns.net. He has tons of bandwidth and a shiny new 64bit system. All the usernames and passwords will be the same for subversion and sftp. The home dir. will change but i'll post more info when stuff is finalized. - syamajala

[arch-ports] getting 32bit pkgbuilds

I had an idea for making it easier for people to get 32bit pkgbuilds. Right now the way i recommend is setting up a 32bit chroot or use an existing 32bit system and nfs. So, what i thought is why not have my server sync nightly and put all the 32bit pkgbuilds in svn on my server so people can just get them with subversion. The only reason i actually have a 32bit chroot on my server is for cvsup. My desktop is a different story. Anyone else have any other ideas? Also, I opened a community tree in svn because mr. green compiled pypanel and c14n wants to create e17 packages. c14n will also start helping out soon. The dev count will be 5! - syamajala

Hey List, still didn't make it to announce a few things on the Archlinux PPC Port since a long struggle with bash/autotools in flac and many other things all around Archlinux/PPC as well as real live. Now I have some time and here goes: 1) New Developer I'd like to welcome Mauricio Bahamonde (aka elkrammer) as - probably the first - developer other than me! *applause* He's going to manage extra and already started to show progress, can't wait to see the first bigger DE make it into Archlinux/PPC other than KDE. Which takes me to the next... 2) KDE 3.5-beta1 for PPC elkrammer was so kind to provide a custom compiled repository with packages for KDE 3.5-beta1. From what I can tell it works at least as stable as the 3.4 series. If you read the workguidelines-section feel free to make comments, suggestions or critize it. :-) 4) libtoolslay and GCC4 migration mostly done I have almost completed the work on a GCC4 powered current/ in testing/. Only a few packages are missing and I intend to move it to current along with the release of the installer. I have a alpha which needs heavy testing at home so expect soemthing soon. Things seem to be going well. I have started recompiling a lot of the packages and have also started working on gnome 2.12. the install base has grown to the whopping number of 4 (that i know about)! [arch-ports] [i586 Port] Problems with installer CD and broken/missing packages

Hey list, only recently I got a old surplus laptop which is powered by a AMD K6-2+ which means I couldn't just simply run Arch-i686 on it. So it was obvious that it was time to try the i586 port. Anyway I ran into several problems I'd like to point out here since there is no bugtracker right now, is there? Installer CD: The iso I downloaded was: http://genesis.blogdns.net/packages/i586/iso/arch_i586-2005-04-11.iso 1) the modules lack proper dependencies so one needs to probe network modules manually for PCMCIA 2) 8390.ko lacks symbols obviously because crc32.ko cannot be probed first since it does not exist 3) the both above made it impossible for me to use my PCMCIA network card and furthermore to use FTP as the install media at all, since this laptop has no network card built-in there was no way to get decent versions from the start 4) the packages cause Pacman to display the strangest warning I've seen so far. something about a syntax error on line 11 probably in the .PKGINFO 5) syslog-ng depends on libol for runtime. libol cannot be resolved cos it's not referenced in the package set on the cd Anyhow I made it to do a forced manual install the hard way (pacman -Ad *.pkg.tar.gz) for base/. Package repository: First try was on: http://genesis.blogdns.net/packages/i586/repo/current 1) Pacman badly requires modification of it's defaults in pacman.* and makepkg.conf for i586 2) autoconf is broken, the autom4te binary is missing which made it impossible for me to build coreutils (there may be more packages around that it breaks) 3) pcmcia-cs is missing, which I again manually built with crunching my teeth :) I started my own repository therefore and plan to contribute to address a lot of the mentioned issues as soon as the problems I heard about on IRC are solved. My partitial current can be found here: http://archppc.kleiner-weise.de/archlinux/current/os/i586/ Keep in mind that it cannot be used as a current replacement yet but I plan to in the future. Also I updated gcc, binutils and glibc plus applied libtoolslaying to some of the packages. Cheers! -kth5

I have found a much better solution for the 32bit backwards compatibility issue. After looking at how debian does things, i have found that for 32bit support they setup a chroot. I thought about this, and it seems like an excellent idea. It will save a lot of time, and it addresses the problem of installing 2 versions of the same package. dchroot could be used to make the chroot almost transparent to the user. The existing 32bit arch packages could be used as well. Since i have not started working the multilib support, this will probably be implemented instead.
