Hi, I recently installed 2 machines, 'home servers' with a 686 build. Will there be an upgrade path provided or do I have to reinstall both machines? regards, Bart

Hi everyone, sorry for writing so late but there is limit of things I can accomplish every day and that list always includes some cat pictures. As you are most likely aware, I recently announced the deprecation of i686 support. However I would like this to turn out into a second tier architecture. I can imagine that there is no need for huge team of packagers; as i686 isn't very different from x86_64, it will be mostly "catch up" game against base distribution (Arch). ARM team already did this work[1] so it's mostly about setting it up with few build servers. ARM port also maintains a separate git repository with modified PKGBUILDs that wouldn't otherwise build on ARM. I'd probably consider targeting i486 or i586 instead to include more old hardware. i686 misses the fanciest features anyway. So these are my 5 cents. Hello everyone, just joined the list. I don't currently use Arch on a i636 system but I definitely understand the need for support. I don't have a lot of experience with maintaining packages and definitely can't keep the whole thing on my own. We could start by creating an organisation on GitHub or any other git platform so we can maintain the PKGBUILDs as ArchLinuxARM is doing [1]. We also would need computational power to compile the packages, a server to act as a repo and a server for the web-site. What I surely can offer is several VPSs in Greece to act as the main web-site and as the repository server. Hello guys, Is anyone else interested in keeping i686 Arch alive? Personally I have one Arch box running i686 with a 17 year old Intel cpu. Of course I could switch to Debian, but I would prefer not to. I don't have any experience developing or maintaining packages, but maybe I could help somehow? Best Regards, Petras

[arch-ports] Installation error

Hello, I am new to Linux in general and the Arch version in particular. I tried to install the Arch Port (2010-07-23_archppc-ftp.iso) via my CD Drive (Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-118L) and got the following result: :: scanning for boot cdrom device Failed to mount /dev/cd/* Failed to mount /dev/cdrom Failed to mount /dev/hd* Failed to mount /dev/sda Failed to mount /dev/sv* Cannot find booted cdrom.dev Cannot continue followed by: kernal panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init! Call Trace: which I could not finish copying before the system rebooted. The system is an upgraded PowerPC G4 Quicksilver (dual 1.73 GHz MPC-7448's replaced the dual 800 MHz MPC-7455's) w/ 1GB RAM, 2 80 GB internal hard drives,2 1TB external Firewire drives (one used as a boot drive), an ATI Radeon PCi graphics card w/ 1 display, and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card w/ 2 displays. While trying to boot, the verbage appears on one display, then switches to the other, then returns to original display to fail. I assume some where a log file is created and I wonder where that log file is along with some help in understanding what is going wrong. Frank J. R. Hanstick trog24(a)comcast.net

Is the project abandoned at this point? It looks like the last package was updated on 2009-06-29. That package (pacman actually) has Zac Brown as the maintainer, which isn't even working with the project at this point. Anyone know the status (and was the packages built using a cluster of some kind, or just by the maintainers themselves?)
