The only possible other explanations I have is having too few memory or a piece of hardware on the machine is running into a kernel panic (in this case the error message should at least indicate, which part of the kernel or driver is hickuping.
Thanks for the info and suggestions, it turns out to be related to a BIOS (?) message displayed at boot concerning a Resource conflict PCI on Motherbord. It appers nearly every boot, but whenever it does not appear the boot of AL32 actually works. I'll see if I can debug that further. Georg
