eval isn't needed here, you can use:
exec {fd}>&-
Whoa!  I should have taken a closer look at the Bash 4.1 CHANGES
file.  That's cool new bit of syntax.  I suppose neither of us is
concerned about supporting Bash 4.0 or earlier?
