[arch-projects] Forum to mailing list
Hi, This is related to Dusty's suggestion on user-contributions.org forum to explore a forum to mailing list system where both forum discussions, which does an excellent job keeping discussions well organised, and mailing list allowing an ease of usage and speed. http://user-contributions.org/forums/userproject/viewtopic.php?t=97 I have installed M2F (Mail2Forum) in usercb forum and works fine. http://user-contributions.org/forums/userproject/viewtopic.php?t=98 If arch-projects mailing list wants to install this system, I am ready to help. If you want use usercb forum is also fine with me. I don't know what you all would think having user-contributions.org joined to this list. http://user-contributions.org/index.html Markku (rasat)

Xentac? This is your baby. ;-) I suggest we either try user-contributions on this list, or set up a second list that accesses it so we can test the interface. The long term goal is, of course, to migrate bbs.archlinux.org to a forum2mail gateway. Although, by that time, we'll probably all be so fed up with the new generation of arch (l)users that we'll probably just stick with this list and ignore the forum. I miss the old Arch when everybody knew more about everything than me. I've always disliked mailing lists, but after using this one with gmail, I'm finding its actually a lot more useful than web bbs software. And I haven't even had to set up filters on any annoying users yet. :-D Dusty Dusty

I think we should use a second list. Wouldn't want to pollute this one testing too much stuff ;) I suppose a yahoo group mailing list is fine, assuming it doesn't mangle the emails too much. Rasat, how is the forum2mail config? Does it let you send only certain categories to the ML? Can you have multiple MLs for categories (say, have all the Projects categories go to some ML and have all the General categories to another)? One of the things the arch forum needs to worry about is what happens with the Moderator category. We don't want anyone to be able to read or see it unless they already have permission on the forum. Personally, I wouldn't mind having to visit the forum to read one category.

It's all about the interface...

The mail2forum (M2F) does two things: (1) forum (web bbs) to mail and (2) mail to forum. I would not suggest using the "mail to forum" feature but instead the topic link attached to message sent from the forum. Example: ########## This is a test!! _________________________________________________________ Sent using Mail2Forum (http://www.mail2forum.com) Read this topic online here: http://user-contributions.org/forums/userproject/viewtopic.php?p=672#672 ######### If I understand correctly from my few tests. The idea here is to post in web bbs and reply with the help of mailing list either clicking the bbs topic link and then reply in bbs, or reply directly to mailing list without sending to bbs. Mailing list members can control what goes public and held private. To Jason's question. M2F requires to assigned individually each forum (not categories) wanted to send posts to a mailing list. Currently it only sends post of users who are registered in both web bbs and mlist only .... using same email address. Non-mailing list members' post will not be sent. But I think this can be hacked if we add a "dummy" registered user in mailing list. Markku (rasat)

I seem to be having trouble with replying to the mailing list. Any idea what's happening to my emails?

Yeah, we would want every post from every user to go to the mailing list no matter what. It would be silly to only have mailing list subscribed users' posts going to the mailing list. It might as well just be a regular mailing list at that point! -- If you understand, things are just as they are. If you do not understand, things are just as they are.

I setup labels + filters for each list... have it "skip inbox" and go to the label... that way, I get a nice little box on the left with all the new posts in each list... BTW, if anyone wants a gmail account, at least to check out the mailing-list threading... I have 50 invites...

I would not suggest to include all forums in bbs.archlinux.org but few selected related to this mailing list. The mail2forum software can do it. As an example I would select these forums only: CD/FTP Installation Package and Security Advisories User Contributions General Programming Forum If we don't user-contributions but another web bbs, then following forums could be included from usercb: Project Discussion How-To

When I joined today this mailing list seeing the big number of mails in the archive, would have been nice if all in a web bbs where easy to search and mails in assigned categories & forums. This is why I like the idea of mail2forum... combining mlist and forum (bbs) thereby having a easy to use "archive" and fast communication. Markku (rasat)
