[arch-releng] How to create a torrent for the ISO

Hi engineers, thanks to a new version of mktorrent it is now easy to create webseed enabled torrents. I have updated my wrapper script to use this instead of my evil ktorrent hack. This script can be found at http://git.archlinux.de/archlinux-torrent-utils/plain/mktorrent-archlinux You will need kmtorrent from http://mktorrent.sourceforge.net/; there is also a PKGBUILD. I would suggest to install this on sigurd and also the opentracker on it. Hi, we currently announced 2009.08-beta1 [1]. Our time plan (if we don't get any showstopper) to RC and final release is: 2009.08-RC on Monday, 3. August 2009 2009.08 Final latest on 9. August 2009 I've build a iso with testing repo enabled to see if we get any problem with packages current in testing but maybe on the release in core/extra - but all seems to work fine. But if you plan other transitions before release date (or if you see anything what could break the images) please hold them back until the release is done. Or leave a reply to us... Open issues for the release which belongs to core/extra packages: ------------- FS#15378 - mkinitcpio does not load usb module Also we wait on initscripts 2009.07-3 (and related packages) enter to core to solve a problem witch hwclock syncing during liveCD shutdown. Hi, we build a new set of ISOs/USB-images for testing by YOU. This is the last set before the RC (and hopefully the Final). Main changes: * New method to detect the boot device with the install medium during boot. This will made the usbdelay parameter obsolete. We also have not not mount each blockdevice to detect the install medium. (Thanks again, Thomas(brain0)) * Grub bootloader setup is refactored so it works with soft raid * Automatic generation of HOOKS in mkinitcpio.conf and correct lines in menu.lst for fancy setups (lvm and dm_crypt, and both) 2009.08-beta1 could be downloaded and tested from here: http://build.archlinux.org/isos/ 2009.08-beta1 should fix following reports: FS#15438 - [aif] pacman fails when using a static IP in interactive FS#13610 - Installing from USB flash drive stalls. FS#15725 - _dia_ask_number() & _cli_ask_number() call show_warning with one arg. FS#13237 - Copying manual network configuration to rc.conf FS#15679 - tell user about editing HOOKS in rc.conf and grub kernel line if using dm_crypt FS#15652 - grub install fail on raid1 software raid FS#13079 - USB images - why did we need usbdelay? [PATCH] Label creation on ISO and USB images Base modification to enable boot device mounting on Label instead of mounting each blockdevice in archiso hook. Thomas would implement the needed modifications in the hook. We have then also to modify the grub/isolinux cmdline to parse the current LABEL into initrd. Gerhard

These two patches make image detection faster and less error-prone. Depending on a unique file system label, the /dev/archiso device is generated and archiso uses mkinitcpio's poll_device to wait for it.

[arch-releng] Official Arch Linux Install Guide changes caused by 2009.08

Hi all, the Official Arch Linux Install Guide ( http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Official_Arch_Linux_Install_Guide ) will need to be changed in various places because 2009.08 will use AIF and no longer archlinux-installer, which differ in various aspects. There are the IMHO following requirements: - current content should not be tampered with, so people who install 2009.02 now or in a few weeks have the correct guide - also after 2009.08 is released, the current guide should probably stay available (maybe under a different name "deprecated"?) for users who still use older discs - by the time 2009.08 is out, the documentation must match it, so we should start working on new documenation now. What I suggest is: - to copy the current page to a "new guide". the new guide gets a note it's only valid for 2009.08 and onwards. the current guide gets a note that says it's only valid until 2009.02 - when 2009.08 is released, I would rename the current page to add "deprecated" or "old" to it. and put the new guide in it's place. (afaik you can't rename pages in wiki's so basically it would mean "copy paste all content to the other") I know AIF best so I would take the lead in doing (most of) the required documentation changes. 1) Is this a good proposal? 2) I can't do any of the other languages, could translators pitch in? 3) I currently have no write access to the install guide (I seem to have no administrator privileges). 4) What would be the best practice for me getting started on the new content, allowing others to contribute but not to ruin my work? Lock the new page and have people email me with corrections? Dieter

There is some time pressure as we want to have the official release mid-august or earlier, and as it brings lots of new stuff, good testing is needed.
