Hmm, i looked how we call it in the installer, and it is: $DESTDIR/sbin/grub-install --recheck --root-directory=$DESTDIR $ROOTDEV part of the installer if your base installation have grub installed.
Sorry, forgot my mail... grub-install is a shell script which calls grub, and so /sbin/grub (ergo grub-gfx's grub).
