Quick question:
Is there a specific reason why hwdetect was not included in this release, as well as that automatic filling in of the modules option in rc.conf?
a) hwdetect is... not very good, old, and deprecated. b) you DO NOT need to fill in the modules array. udev does everything. In fact on three of my machines the only things I have listed in the modules array are a blacklisted pcspkr, kvm modules, cpufreq modules, and other things that aren't detected with EITHER udev or hwdetect. Short answer: because it's simply not needed and is inelegant
