[arch-releng] Fw: [arch-dev-public] Arch Linux release in the press
Cool stuff. Aren't we the first distro to officially release images with 2.6.28/ext4 et al ? Dieter Begin forwarded message: Date: Tue, 17 Feb 2009 13:50:44 +0100 From: Andrea Scarpino <andrea@archlinux.org> To: Public mailing list for ArchLinux development <arch-dev-public@archlinux.org> Subject: Re: [arch-dev-public] Arch Linux release in the press 2009/2/17 Thomas Bächler <thomas@archlinux.org>:
I just noticed by accident that our release announcement made it to heise open. This is the first time that Arch has been mentioned on heise at all, so I am a bit psyched. Anyway, for those who know German, read here: http://www.heise.de/open/Arch-Linux-2009-02--/news/meldung/132693
It's not much more than a translation of the release announcement, but should still attract some more German users.
I'd like to use this thread to collect more press coverage of our release, so if you see anything, post it here (or reply on arch-general). Also a popular Italian site[1] have announced the our ISO is released :) nice

I think we are, if you don't count alpha or beta releases (Fedora and Ubuntu have stuff in development and already released images afaik). One might argue that Arch is not "stable" and doesn't count Anyway, IMO it is the right time to shout "FIRST!".

I think that there may be a problem with the "archlinux-2009.02-ftp-i686.img file." I have made several attempts to create a USB image from this file. When the 'dd' operation completes, the USB stick I am writing to is left with only a lost+found directory. I can successfully create an image from the "archlinux-2009.02-core-i686.img" file and it boots just fine. cheers troy

It's fine to see that the ISO release get so many attention. Searching with "Arch Linux 2009.02" founds a lot of announces meanwhile. Either the text of our announce news or a modified. What i see often in this news is: Arch 2009.02 released. The same "mistake" what Aaron mentioned: It's not clear for the news writers that we have a rolling release and that 2009.02 is "only" a snapshot for new installations. So we should - in the announces for the next iso release - make a bigger hint on this, like we do it on the download page on archlinux.org. Somewhat like "For new installations only. An Arch Linux system can always be updated with `pacman -Syu`" So we should make this a bigger part in the next news IMHO. Gerhard

Yeah that could be made more explicit on the Download page too.

Good point Gerhard about being more clear in the news. Could someone with priviliges do a little update of the news item? Though I find it is already clear enough on the download page. I mean not for this release, for the next releases (ex. 2009.04). News on heise, linuxmagazin or whatelse are already written, even when we would change our new now...

Yeah, "going forward" we have to make it more apparent that this is not a "release" - perhaps we should change the wording to something like "2009.04 Installer" instead of "2009.04 Release" or something. Working the word "snapshot" in there would be a good idea too

Well, "Current Release: 2009.02" can be misleading. Maybe something like "Latest ISO Installer/Snapshot: 2009.02" might be better.

I don't care whether some news reporter uses the word release or snapshot, as long as our _users_ know how we work. Imho we should just make it clear in several places (eg download page, beginners guide etc), so we can keep using the word "release". (are really that many users confused now? I have no insight on that) Sure we have a rolling release model, but still our isos/img's are definitely not "just" a snapshot: - they are planned - we work "towards" them and provide support afterwards - we do a core freeze a while before, and during the release. - they are carefully tested. - we time releases of other packages/tools to "fit" in the iso release scheme (eg installer) - ... Imho the word "snapshot" doesn't do much justice to our images and makes it sound like just that, a snapshot. Most likely if we start using the word "snapshot" people new to Arch might be more hesitant to try it out because it doesn't sound like something well tested/engineered/supported. Which may be a bigger problem then what we have now. Think about it. Dieter

I don't really see anything bad about that. Does it mean that novice users will try to learn more about Linux in general before trying Arch? Even though there is a core 'chilling', the packages that are included are still a snapshot. What you're distributing are Arch Linux system images with installation helper and core packages snapshot. The system is a snapshot, the packages are, and so might the installation helper be. I think snapshot is a very fitting term.
