[arch-releng] Please test the recent isos
Hi all, I would like to push out a new official release soon, both archiso and aif are brought up to date and things seem pretty good. Official media are pretty much broken because of their outdatedness so it's important to come out with something new soon, and I will be a bit less pedantic in terms of quality control. Here's how you can help: get 2011.08.13 or 2011.08.14 (will start building in a few hours) or later and do an installation with it. Preferably pick options and features that have no mention yet on http://www.archlinux.org/releng/feedback/ (i.e. if "last success" shows 2011.08.13 or 2011.08.14 for architectures i686 and x86_64, then try a dual image, similarly try to try a filesystem that others haven't tried yet, etc) There is a bug with 2011.08.13 in that it will solely use the first repository you picked in "Select source", you can ignore that, it's fixed already in git. (if you use these images, make sure your first select item is a [core] repo) http://releng.archlinux.org/isos/ http://www.archlinux.org/releng/feedback/ thanks for your help, Dieter

thanks for your help, Dieter Just tested .14.
Just a few noticable bugs/ decisions: -Repo selecting , one feature i like, although it doesn't seem to remember the repos you selected when you boot into your install and there is no pacsave. so pacman didn't overwrite it. -Groups when installing packages, the groups are really random and don't really add value. For example gambas, who would really install that, i'm fine with a selection of groups like lxde,base,base-devel,gnome,kde,xfce4. But groups xorg-drivers make no sense -Packages to install, shows wget and some other packages multiple times http://ompldr.org/vOXc2Mg , not world shocking but it might be confusing for new users. -Of course I selected some groups and then pacman couldn't resolve deps http://ompldr.org/vOXc2NQ The rest of the install worked fine, so heads up! -- Jelle van der Waa

weird. after you choose repos and AIF created pacman.conf, AIF does pacman -Sy, before you can do your selections. It looks to me like this is not an aif issue.

that's fixed also. sorry guys.. Btw you can pretty easily update AIF on any image like this: pacman -S git make git clone git://github.com/Dieterbe/aif.git cd aif git checkout develop make install this way you have the latest aif which you can use to do a testrun if you hit any issues. (but before you invoke aif after a failed run, you may need to umount all target mountpoints (/mnt, /mnt/boot, /mnt/home, etc) and swapoff /dev/sda2 or whichever swap devices you used. otherwise aif won't be able to use these devices as they are already in use. if you manage to do a successful install with a recent iso and an aif from git, you can use the feedback app and just report for the most recent version listed there. Hi, I tested the automatic install with 2011.08.16 but it is failing while executing target_prepare_pacman. I want to install the package only from the local core repository without donwloading anything from a mirror. The problem seems to be on line 36: [ -n "$MIRROR" ] && configure_mirrorlist runtime || return 1 If $MIRROR is unspecified, my case, this always ends with an exit code of 1. Should it not be something like that: [ -n "$MIRROR" ] && configure_mirrorlist runtime Thanks Charles

Thanks, fixed in git: - [ -n "$MIRROR" ] && configure_mirrorlist runtime || return 1 + if [ -n "$MIRROR" ]; then + configure_mirrorlist runtime || return 1 + fi (the `|| return 1` is needed for propagating errorcodes so we know if a step failed because an important command during the step failed somewhere, potentially called in a "sub function") Dieter

The problem seems to be on line 36: [ -n "$MIRROR" ]&& configure_mirrorlist runtime || return 1
If $MIRROR is unspecified, my case, this always ends with an exit code of 1.
Should it not be something like that: [ -n "$MIRROR" ]&& configure_mirrorlist runtime
Thanks
Charles
Thanks, fixed in git:
- [ -n "$MIRROR" ]&& configure_mirrorlist runtime || return 1 + if [ -n "$MIRROR" ]; then + configure_mirrorlist runtime || return 1 + fi
(the `|| return 1` is needed for propagating errorcodes so we know if a step failed because an important command during the step failed somewhere, potentially called in a "sub function")

He posted a little guide earlier on how to update aif without requiring to download a new iso.
I moved the current 2011.08.17 isos to 2011.08.17-old new 2011.08.17 isos (with this and some other bugfixes) should appear soon (within an hour or so) there still are some known bugs I want to fix, mainly this one, but now I gotta so that will be for later. if anyone else wants to have a look, it shouldn't be hard. 25610 Broken arch install via proxy Dieter
Hi, Now everything looks fine for me with 2011.08.17. I can't report my install on the feedback page: the 2011.08.17 version isn't there. And I apparently am the first to test PXE booting. I also updated the config examples of Trapezium (http://hg.vejnar.org/trapezium). Btw, do you think it worth mentioning it in the release new features ? Thanks for the good work. Charles

2011.08.17 is not available because of a bug/feature (depending on whether you're talking to me or Dan), this has been fixed/hacked now, but I don't know why the version is not visible yet. Maybe the new script is not live yet. But either way, 2011.08.18 just became available, you can also try that out. Thanks for testing PXE, I also found it sad the feedback page didn't contain a single result for it yet. Even though trapezium looks like a very cool project, I don't think it belongs in the release announcement for the new archiso images. Dieter

Ok, I will test the 2011.08.18. For Trapezium, I was thinking about the automated_script feature/hook. Charles

so, what exactly do you want or suggest? It's not clear to me. Dieter

Sorry I was thinking it was clear: the possibility to start automatically a script after booting. Charles

Yes ok, but do you want me to list Trapezium as an example in the archiso release announcement, or in the archiso readme or what? Dieter

Well you seemed to be not really open to the idea in your previous email but if you want then yes gladly. Thanks Charles
