[aur-general] ttf-google-webfonts{,-distilled,-git,-hg} mess

I am the current maintainer of the AUR package ttf-google-webfonts-hg[4], and I'm bothered by the mess of various packages there are for Google's Web Fonts project. It's not at all KISS in its current state. There are currently four different AUR packages[1][2][3][4] that essentially supply the same files, and all four packages conflict with each other. Around August of 2012, the package named ttf-google-webfonts[1] was orphaned, and user w0ng created a GitHub repository[5] that mirrors the Mercurial repository[6] on Google Code (why?). Then, the new maintainer changed the original ttf-google-webfonts package from a VCS-type package that simply lacked "-hg" in the name to a package that pulls tarballs from w0ng's GitHub repo[5]. As you can see in the comments for ttf-google-webfonts[1], this has caused all sorts of confusion and messages about the package being out-of-date or having invalid checksums. To get around these issues, user epinephrine created the package ttf-google-webfonts-git[3] that clones w0ng's GitHub repo[5] instead of pulling tarballs from it, which significantly reduces the maintenance required on the package. Then, user Gently created a package named ttf-google-webfonts-distilled[2] that pulls a tarball from w0ng's GitHub repo[5] and only installs a small subset of the fonts therein. Shortly after ttf-google-webfonts[1] was changed from being a Mercurial-based package and not liking the direction that the package was taking, I reuploaded the original ttf-google-webfonts package as ttf-google-webfonts-hg[4] for people that simply wanted the old package back that uses the actual Google Web Fonts repository to download the files. To clean up this mess, I propose that ttf-google-webfonts-distilled[2] and ttf-google-webfonts-git[3] be deleted outright, for what should be obvious reasons. I also propose that ttf-google-webfonts[1] be deleted because of how frequently the Web Fonts project is updated and because the project lacks version numbers. If people really feel strongly about keeping that maintenance nightmare, then let them have it, but I really don't see what advantage it provides over the original ttf-google-webfonts-hg[4] other than one less makedepends. [aur-general] Registering, misspelling email, losing account

Hello, everyone! So today I decided to contribute to AUR and register an account. I was pretty surprised by the fact that registration form asked me about SSH and PGP key information, but never asked me about password. At the moment, I was impressed. Not for long, though. I was pretty confused by the fact that I will receive a "reset password" email. Soon after that, I realized that it might be some kind of "account confirmation". The common way of confirming emails is using some "confirmation link". Keeping it simple, AUR got rid of such an ugly feature and basically confirms that email is correct by letting the email owner set the password. Great idea, right? Wrong. I would love to call it a great idea. It really follows "keep it simple" principle. Instead of implementing email confirmation, AUR seems to use the simple principle: "If you can set the password, you're definitely the legitimate owner". I would have supported this concept if it wasn't for one thing: I can't access my own account. That's right, I messed up. Instead of typing fastmail.com, I typed fastmai.com. And now there is no way I can access my account. The only option is to send an email to this mailing list describing my problem and hope that somebody will help me out. Basically, that's what I'm doing right now. People tend to make mistakes. I'm not the only one who messed up during registration. And there is no easy way to get our account back. Mailing list is not the best option for account recovery. What if the misspelled email exists and the owner decides to proceed and register? What if the owner decides to do nasty things using my username, full name and email that looks alike? That would affect my reputation in the community since it's difficult to prove that I was not the bad guy. The usual "account activation" prevents this stuff. A lot of web sites do not automatically log user in after account confirmation, so it kind of prevents malicious activity (the bad guy doesn't know the password, you see). I would love to see the community grow as much as I would love to get my account back, so I wrote this message in a way that might start a discussion. I might be wrong about "bad design", though. So I welcome replies that explain why this design is better than others. And by the way, the fact that you can use an unused (not registered) email in account recovery and not get any errors is frustrating. [aur-general] Password reset (reg mailbox has been deleted)

Hello everybody, I just ask to help me restore my access to the AUR Web. I was registered there in 2012 but forgot my passwd. My mailbox that I used to register to the AUR Web has been deleted and I've switched to another one, but didn't change a ref. to it in the AUR Web. So for now I'm unable to continue with reset my passwd. What to do? (I don't want to register again because I already have an account. The same thing is true for me for Arch Linux Forums and Arch Linux Bugtracker: I've used there the same email as for the AUR Web.)
